  • Some philosophers and historians said that the
rebellion was the most important revolutionary
event of the twentieth century, because was not
due to a limited section of the population, as
workers or minorities, but a popular uprising
which overcame ethnic barriers, cultural, age and
    class.

  • In 1968, dissatisfied with the rigid discipline,
    school curricula and conservative academic
structure, students in Paris organized protests
that lead to the occupation of the University of
Nanterre (west of Paris) on March 23. They also
challenge the social and political situation of
the country and the government of General Charles
de Gaulle, because of wear caused by the war of
    independence in Algeria.

4
  • Among the slogans created is Forbidden Banning,
The Power Is in the Streets and The Imagination
    in power.

5
  • Influenced by students, workers held protests in
    Paris, occupying factories and organizing
movements and strikes. On May 6 the confrontation
occurs between 13 thousand young people and
police. The police launched tear gas bombs,
answered with stones by young people. At first,
the French government gets paralyzed. But the
situation is controlled by the end of May, with
violent repression. There are more than 1.5
thousand injured. The government of De Gaulle,
shaken, maintains itself in power only until
    April 1969.

6
  • The events in Paris are part of a larger movement
to challenge that occurs in several countries of
the West, such as Germany, Italy, Belgium,
    Holland (Netherlands), Switzerland, Denmark,
Spain, United Kingdom, Poland, Mexico, Argentina
and Chile. Young people and workers protesting
against the post-war situation, the wars and
occupations. In criticism, in general, there is a
mixture of political radicalism and irreverence,
which accuses both capitalism and socialism.
