  • Helena JOAQUIM

2
  • Ireland, the proverb goes,
  • is the
  • "Land of Saints and Scholars."

3
  • 92 of the Republic's population is Roman
    Catholic.
  • 3 identify themselves as Protestant.
  • 5 claim no religious beliefs.

4
Church and the School
  • Discrimination based on religion is almost
    non-existent.
  • Different traditions are respected.
  • In Dublin there are Moslem schools, Hebrew
Schools, and Protestant institutions of learning.
In the countryside, there is a tradition of
    tolerance within the schools.

5
  • There is no separation of church and state.
  • Most schools today are national schools presided
over by the secular Department of Education.
  • Religion is required until graduation from high
    school.

6
  • The relationship between the people and the
    church is complex.
  • Lately acceptance of the Church's moral authority
has been rocked by a series of scandals involving
paedophile priests and a popular bishop who
turned out to be using funds to support a
    mistress and son.

7
Mass Attendance
  • A great majority of the elderly people of the
    community attend a Sunday Mass.
  • Most of the teenagers dont attend a Sunday Mass
considering it boring nevertheless, they go to
church to get married and have their children
    baptised .
  • There are no church related youth groups.

8
Divorce in Ireland
  • Divorce rate has already gone up since it became
legal still ,it is not accepted by the church.(
5-6 years have to pass before you get married in
    a church again).
  • Civil marriages percentage increases.
  • Abortion is not legal in Ireland.

9
  • If you take a look at the old Irish 5 note,
you'll see something unique among the currencies
of the world. The picture embossed on the bill
was not of a president or king. Instead, the
scene is a classroom presided over by a Nun.

10
Churches as pubs ?!
  • Situated in the centre of the city in the heart
of Irelands shopping areas, Churches are some of
    Dublins most unique buildings.
  • One of them has been magnificently transformed
into a Cafe, Bar, Restaurant and even into a Late
    Night Club.
  • Another one has been turned into a Tourist
    Information Office.
