The Ordinary World

• The ordinary world for the main characters in
  Office space (Peter, Samir, and Michael) is the
  dull, boring lives that they live. They work at a
  company called Initech as software programs. They
  sit through hours of traffic to get to work, the
  they spend all day sitting in cubicles wishing
  things were better.

Call to Adventure

• The CEO of Initech hires 2 consultants who are
  going to help downsize the company. Peter is
  getting promoted to a manager for missing work,
  and showing a lack of effort, while Samir and
  Michael are going to get fired. Peter tells Samir
  and Michael and they decide that they should do
  something. They plot to rip off the company using
  a hacking scheme.

Refusal of the call

• The characters think for a while about their
  plot. The think that it is too risky and that
  they could get arrested. However after they lose
  their jobs, they decide the only way to get
  through it was to attempt the scheme.

Supernatural Aid

• Supernatural aid comes in many ways in this
  story. The first is that peter gets hypnotized
  and it makes him not care one bit about how he
  does his job. This makes him not really care if
  he gets caught in the scam. The other
  supernatural aid was the program skills of the
  characters, allowing them to pull off the scam.
  There is one last supernatural aid, the character
  Milton, he gives the story a unique ironic ending.

Crossing the Threshold

• In the scene of the movie where the characters
  insert the computer virus to rip off the company
  they are crossing the threshold. The gate keeper
  is peters new girlfriend, she feels that it is a
  bad idea to try and rip off the company.

In the belly of the whale

• The characters enter the belly of the whale when
  they check the balance of the account from the
  company theyve been ripping off. Instead of
  having 92 cents, they have 920,000 dollars of the
  companies money. They then realize that they are
  in trouble.

The road of trials

• The characters are not faced with too many
  trials. The only major trial is the one that
  peter faces. He has to still deal with work, and
  his new girlfriend.

Meeting with the goddess

• Peter decides himself that he should keep the
  money and skip town. However that would somewhat
  be the way of the temptress. Instead, he talks to
  his girlfriend and his neighbor, and his neighbor
  and girlfriend help him choose not to keep it

The woman as the temptress

• The money tempts peter to follow the easy way
  out, instead of staying and working he steals the
  money, which is what the temptress is. The other
  form of the temptress is one of peters
  co-workers, he gets in a car accident and gets
  tons of money from a lawsuit, basically taking
  the easy way out, and this intrigues peter.

Apotheosis

• Peter reaches apotheosis when he I hypnotized and
  he feels that he has control of his life and
  work. He doesnt really care anymore and he just
  forgets about work

The Ultimate Boon

• The ultimate boon comes when the characters steal
  the copy machine from the office and destroy it.
  This symbolizes their separation from the company.

Refusal of return

• Peter doesnt want to return the money and go
  back to his awful life as a slaving programmer in
  a cubical. With the help of his friends though he
  finds its not worth it to keep the money.

Crossing the the return threshold

• Peter decides its best to return the money, and
  he confesses in a note, and puts the money in the
  CEOs office with the note. However Milton goes
  into the CEOs office and takes the money and
  burns down the office and goes to Mexico.

Master of two worlds

• Peter, michael and samir get back on their feet.
  Peter works with his neighbor as a construction
  worker. Michael and Samir go to work at another
  computer company and everyone ends up happy.
