Ambition
  • Ambition is the real tragedy of the people in
    Macbeth
  • Ambition is the desire for power
  • It is the main theme in Macbeth

Macbeth
  • - In the beginning of the play Macbeth fought
    courageously against the invaders
  • Macbeth then won the respect from King Duncan
  • King Duncan rewarded Macbeth with the title Thane
    of Cawdor, but not before he met the witches

Macbeth continued
  • Macbeth and Banquo were met by the witches
  • The witches told the two of their future and
    addressed Macbeth as
  • thane of Glamis,
  • thane of Cawdor,
  • and as king
  • When the witches called Macbeth this his ambition
    rose as he considered the title

Lady Macbeth
  • Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth about
    the witches prophecies. She then feels as if
    Macbeth would not be ambitious enough to
    overthrow the king.
  • She convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan
  • Throughout the story she is able to keep Macbeth
    wanting to keep the throne
  • As time goes on Lady Macbeth looses her own
    identity in the lust for power and shows signs of
    evilness

The witches
  • The witches are the ones who had made the
    ambition come out in the characters.
  • They are able to find the weakness in Macbeth and
    guide him to murder
  • It is not known if they are just messengers of
    fate or if they are just creating the chaos
    themselves
  • When Macbeth starts to doubt what he is doing the
    witches come up with other prophecies

Hallucinations
  • Ambition lead to the killings which then lead to
    hallucinations of guilt
  • Macbeth begins to doubt his course when he begins
    hallucinating.
  • He sees the dagger that leads him to Duncan and
    then he sees Banquos ghost.

  • Lady Macbeth expresses her guilt before she takes
    her life
  • The Ambition of the prophecies lead Lady Macbeth
    to a hunger for power.
  • She was the one who had urged Macbeth to kill
  • During her hallucinations her hands were stained
    with the blood of the ones they had killed

  • She should have died hereafter. There
    would have been a time for such a word.
    Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in
    this petty pace from day to day To the last
    syllable of recorded time. And all our
    yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty
    death. Out, out, brief candle. Lifes but a
    walking shadow, a poor player That struts and
    frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard
    no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of
    sound and fury, Signifying nothing.
  • When Macbeth receives word of her death he does
    not morn because he is still battling and he is
    still blinded by ambition.
