Four Areas of Discussion - the Tip of the
Iceberg
  • Web based distribution of public documents
  • Geographic display of customer requests for
    maintenance work within City roadways
  • Utilization of City roadway images via the
Internet to create a Virtual Ride
  • Educational outreach required to advertise and
train consultants, the general public, and staff

3
Web Based Distribution Genesis of our Program
  • Process was already underway to scan 100,000
    construction plan sheets
  • TDOT needed distribution platform that
  • Didnt require individual software costs to
    deploy amongst all users
  • Was easy to learn and use
  • Built on existing regional technology
  • Enhanced TDOT business
  • Was capable of distributing LARGE amounts of data
  • TDOT settled on Autodesks MapGuide platform 5
    years ago

4
Web Based Distribution What we have achieved
  • 300 unique clients each day (65 of which are
    public clients)
  • Surveyors, engineers, architects, planners,
realtors, title people, news media, citizens
  • Efficiency results of our system
  • 80 reduction in ALL walk in clients seeking
    data
  • Reduction of required customer service time has
resulted in staff freed up to create more data
    for distribution!!
  • Regional estimates indicate a 241
    savings/investment ratio
  • One client recently stated, I do all of my
research with your site. It is the best I have
ever seen and, I do a lot of business!

5
Web Based Distribution What we have achieved
  • 350 tons of pollutants per year are NOT entering
our quality air in Tucson due to fewer physical
    trips to the offices

6
Geographic Display of Service Requests Example
of application for BOTH internal and external
customers
  • Public request for work are digitized onto a
    map
  • Service requests can be viewed on the TDOT
    MapGuide maps found at http//tdotmaps.transview.o
    rg
  • Benefits to this application
  • Easy tracking of Service Request(s) and
    anticipated completion dates
  • Grouping of similar requests by maintenance
    crews for increased efficiency
  • Elimination of duplicate requests
  • Historical analysis of request data View Movie

7
The ARAN Van - Virtual RideSharing information
gathered for another purpose
  • Automated Road Analyzer (ARAN)
  • Van captures location (GPS), ride quality, and
infrared data from roadway surface (every 25
    feet)
  • Virtual Ride solution has offered the data to the
    public
  • View Movie

Education TrainingHow we get people to know
what we have
  • Pima County hosts quarterly classes
  • Professional Society meetings, luncheons,
    seminars, etc.
  • TDOT training for small groups (citizens,
    companies, staff)
  • Actual use of mapping system at meetings
  • Occasional news article
  • Users are smarter today
  • Greatest challenge is letting people know what
    data is available
