The Screenplay

  • Contains all the information required to realise
the film -everything from characters, their
dialogue and actions, to locations, props and
    camera angles
  • Is written and rewritten many times

    Superman)
  • Cinderella Dreams come true (Example Pretty
    Woman)

  • Faust Selling your soul to the devil may bring
riches, but eventually you belong to him
    (Example Bedazzled)

    (Example The Sixth Sense)

both are already spoken for (Example Serendipity)

Creating Your Own Story
  • Choose a story that interests you
  • Football, love stories, leaving home, the future,
    etc..
  • Inspiration sources
  • The newspaper
  • People talking in a queue (bus)
  • The what if premise
  • What if you knew something no-one else did?
  • Write about what you know and use people you know
as the basis for your characters

7
Character Driven or Plot Driven
  • A love story finding or losing someone you love
    and how that affects you
  • This is character driven about people and how
    events effect their lives
  • A murder mystery where you piece together the
    clues to solve the crime
  • This is plot driven the focus is on the events,
the things that happen that eventually make sense
    of the story

8
Conflicts
  • A girl wants a boyfriend and gets one
  • Stories need conflict to generate interest
  • Due to cultural or parental issues, a girl cant
see anyone and therefore cant get a boyfriend
  • How will she solve this
  • Conflicts are internal (in the characters head)
or external (parents, culture, friends, the law)

9
Character Growth
  • What goals do your characters have
  • What are their obstacles to achieving that goal
  • The more dynamic the story, the bigger the change
in the character from beginning to end

10
Some questions
  • What is the protagonist like?
  • What is the catalytic event?
  • What is the narrative shape (plot)?
  • What is the dramatic shape (emotions)?
