Suffocation
  • National Safety Council recognizes two types of
    suffocation
  • Suffocation - ingested object
  • Suffocation - mechanical
  • Abdominal thrusts aka Heimlich maneuver

Suffocation by ingestion
  • In children, choking is usually caused by food,
    toys and other small objects that get easily
    lodged in a childs small airway.
  • Anything that fits can be a danger raw carrots
    and celery, peas, nuts, sunflower seeds, cherries
    with pits, watermelon with seed, popcorn and hard
    candy are a few examples.

Suffocation
  • Mechanical suffocation includes smothering by bed
    clothes, thin plastic materials, cave-ins or
    confinement in closed spaces, cords, etc.
  • Third leading cause of death in children up to
    four years of age
  • The most common way for children to suffocate is
    in the bed or crib and by accidental hanging.
