Title: RTESS Roadmap Dock Allen

1
RTESS RoadmapDock Allen
  • Briefing to C4I, November 3, 2004
  • Objective
  • Establish priorities
  • Coordinate WorkC4I/2004-11-26

2
Topics
  • Who we are
  • Work in progress
  • Potential new RFPs
  • Other areas of interest
  • Process and Technical Issues
  • Overlaps and Priorities

3
RTESS
  • Focal point OMG technologies for specialized
    systems. E.g
  • Real-time Systems
  • Hard real-time, Soft real-time, Interactive
    real-time
  • All things temporal
  • Fault Tolerant / Highly Available Systems
  • Embedded Systems
  • High Performance Systems (e.g. parallel
    processing)
  • Safety Critical Systems (and some Security work
    where there is overlap)
  • MO Adapt existing specifications
  • Minimum CORBA, RT CORBA, FT CORBA
  • Sponsor new specs where needed (e.g. DDS, GNC
    client)

4
Work in Progress (likely C4I interest)
  • GNS Client Interface (recommended)
  • RT Notification (real-time)
  • Model-based Test and Debug (recommended)
  • High Assurance CORBA (safety critical)
  • Power Conservation Services (embedded)
  • Reliable Ordered Multicast for CORBA (High
    performance)
  • High Performance Enablers (will be recommended
    this week)

5
RTESS Roadmap (1 of 3)
  • O/S adaptation service
  • Primarily for RT and embedded systems
  • Portable OO interface to commonly used OS
(Windows, Linux, Posix, COTS RTOS) services
    (threading, timers, etc)
  • Capture current practice (such as ACE)
  • Not tied to RT CORBA or DDS, but must be
    compatible
  • QoS-aware MoM Services
  • A trend in some embedded RT systems
  • Ideal support JMS, W3C MEP, and COTS RT
    messaging
  • Ideal compatible with/ composable with DDS and
    CORBA
  • Not Enterprise MoM (too many big non-OMG
    vendors)
  • Real-time Fault Tolerance (possibly a framework)
  • Standard Real-time CORBA protocol

6
RTESS Roadmap (2 of 3)
  • Extensions to DDS
  • DDS interoperability and middleware interworking
    (MARS)
  • Lightweight, QoS, threading, RT interworking
    (RTESS)
  • QoS-aware J2EE
  • Probably not an OMG initiative, but want to gauge
    interest
  • Critical to QoS-sensitive web services and
    Net-centric operations
  • Additional High-Assurance profiles
    /specializations
  • Possibly DDS and important services
  • Dual-access services (e.g. CORBA and DDS)
  • Time as published data??
  • GNC client??

7
RTESS Roadmap (3 of 3)
  • UML-simulation integration
  • Likely item for resurrected SIMSIG (may start in
    RTAD)
  • Probably run-time (versus model transformation)
    integration
  • HLA? DIS? Other
  • A possible scenario for executable UML
  • Support for MDA in sim-based acquisition
  • Protection Profile for Middleware
  • Initial look in January
  • New UML Profile for RT, Embedded systems
  • Opportunity to work in Aspect-oriented modeling
  • Aspect-Oriented Modeling / Design / Programming
  • UML profile for System-on-a-Chip (SoC)

8
Other Items of Interests to RTESS
  • Load Distribution (MARS)
  • Possible future lightweight and QoS extensions
  • Executable UML (ADTF)
  • QoS/embedded impacts
  • Relationship with model-based test and debug
  • CMS (C4I)

9
Process issues
  • Light-weight process doing common specializations
    of OMG specs?
  • E.g. lightweight profiles
  • Light-weight process for adding a new interface
    modes to a service?
  • E.g. Time available through DDS
  • Light-weight process for synchronizing specs
(e.g. bringing Minimum CORBA up to CORBA 3.0)?
  • Scenario-based interface factoring, possibly
    using UML?
  • A more rigorous process for subsetting?
  • A way to standardize frameworks and PIMs where
    there is no implementation

10
Technical Issues
  • Middleware interworking and composability are
    becoming critical issues
  • DDS, CORBA, and CORBA Events being used together
    what is the standard?
  • Not just coexistance, but also the ability to
    exchange application entities (data-events)
  • MDA support for
  • Integration of PIMs into legacy systems
  • Re-architecting the PIM Versus rearchitecting /
    wrapping the legacy
  • Managing performance issues
  • QoS and other ilities

11
Overlaps and Priorities
12
Other needs?
  • Inputs, please
