Motivation for Studies
  • Studies of calendars part of a wider
investigation of technology use in the home
sponsored by the Equator IRC www.equator.ac.uk
  • The calendar is one of the most successful
    coordination tools in the workplace
  • Calendars are ubiquitous in the home an
    opportunity to explore ubiquitous computing
    concretely (beyond the lab)

3
The Domestic Challenge
  • Problem
  • The home and the workplace are different social
organizational domains each with unique needs
  • Existing approaches developed in the workplace
    are inappropriate
  • Solution
  • Explicate the interpretive work (Dourish et al.
1993) of calendar work in the home i.e.
    embodied arrangements of interaction observably
and reportably implicated in the use of calendars
whereby household members make sense of calendars
    and coordinate their work together

4
Addressing the Challenge (1)
  • Instance 1.
  • The Calendar as an Accountable Social Object

5
Addressing the Challenge (2)
  • Instance 2.
  • Essential Accountable Work-Practices

6
Addressing the Challenge (3)
  • Instance 3.
  • Negotiation and Collaboration

7
Findings
  • A Corpus of Accountable Work-Practices
  • Situating calendars so that they are available to
    collaboration
  • Complying with coordination protocols
  • Making visibly distinct annotations
  • Adding explicatory notations
  • Accomplishing collaborative access

8
Implications for Design
  • Merging the Physical with the Digital
  • Anywhere, anytime
  • Devising Negotiation Protocols
  • Computer mediated interaction
  • Supporting Collaborative Access
  • Distributed collaboration
