Title: Preparing for Ofsted

1
Preparing for Ofsted
  • A deputys perspective.
  • Terry Jones and Pat Finegan.

2
4 Main Issues
  • 1. Leadership/Partnership
  • 2. Overview of school.
  • 3. Monitoring.
  • 4. Ofsteds Issues
  • a) National
  • b) Local
  • C) School.

3
Leadership/Partnership
  • Relationship with Headteacher. (team)
  • Your specific role (subject/aspect etc)
  • Are you still an expert teacher. (Ask to be
observed teaching to improve the teaching
    grades???)
  • Building capacity in other senior or middle
    managers.

4
Overview
  • The Deputy Head should have access to exactly the
same information as the HT?? (discuss)
  • What happens if the Head is run over by a bus? (
    I only do KS1!!)
  • SEF do you know it not have you read it!
What are the judgements in it?

5
SEF (Ofsted)
  • A summary of the findings of self-evaluation
undertaken by the school is recorded in the
self-evaluation form (SEF) which is used by the
lead inspector to focus inspection effort where
it matters most. The schools summary of its
self-evaluation is used as the basis for
discussion between the lead inspector and the
senior team and, where possible, governors of the
    school.
  • The quality and use made of school
self-evaluation are a good indication of the
calibre of management. Evidence of how
    effectively schools undertake self-evaluation and
the use they make of it helps inspectors to
evaluate the quality of management in the school
and the capacity of the school to improve.

6
Monitoring
  • Lesson observations
  • Book Trawl marking and presentation pupil and
    peer assessment is it consistent?
  • Pupil Voice (school council what have they
changed in school?) Ofsted are currently
    concentrating on this.
  • Data analysis who is the expert in school?
    Should you be an expert?
  • Planning differentiated, annotated and
    consistent

7
Ofsteds Issues
  • National Issues
  • A) Tracking progress.
  • B) Vulnerable Pupils (LAC)
  • C) Closing the gap (SEN)
  • D) Boys
  • E) Community Cohesion.
  • Are any of these your issues? And you are doing
    what?

8
Ofsteds Issues
  • Local Issues
  • In Dudley it is mathematics and KS1. Is it
yours? And you are doing what? Any impact so far?
  • 1) Cooperation with outside agencies and other
    local schools?
  • 2) Parental voice.
  • Ofsted will be focussing on these 2 in greater
    detail next year.

9
School Issues.
  • SEF as previously discussed.
  • Why are these your issues? (data) What have you
done about them? Impact so far? (milestones).
  • Pre Inspection Briefing. This is what Ofsted
think your issues are. Have a response ready when
    they arrive.
  • Do not forget issues from last inspection.

10
Finally
  • Wet nurse to staff and Head. (Morale and
    chocolate biscuits)
  • Room to work in with power points for their lap
    tops. (probably your office!!!)
  • Day to day management of the process for
    inspectors (tea, coffee, water, chocolate
    biscuits, fruit and lunch)
  • Plan the celebration?
