British-French Rivalry
  • During the 1700s Englands power was steadily
    growing.
  • The English ruled Scotland, Wales, and Ireland
    (known as Britain)
  • For years Britain and France had been fighting
    against each other for wealth and empire in
    different parts of the world.
  • Both forces also wanted to control lands west of
    the Appalachian Mountains.

British-French Rivalry
  • The bitterness only heightened when British
    interests turned to Ohio River Valley.
  • The French believed the territory was their own
    and they did not want the British to have access
    to their profitable fur trade.
  • But when the British fur traders built a fort
    called Pickawillany, the French attacked and
    drove the British out of Ohio.
  • In addition French troops began raiding towns in
    Maine and New York.

  • With tensions well underway, both the British and
    French looked to the natives for support.

French Advantage
  • More Native American Allies
  • French were interested in fur trading. They were
    not looking to take over Native American land.
  • French trappers and fur traders often married
    Native American women and even followed their
    customs and traditions.
  • French helped convert natives to Catholicism,
    however, the natives did so willingly.

Iroquois Confederacy
  • Most powerful group of Native Americans in the
    East settled in New York.
  • Also called the Eastern Woodland Natives or the
    League of Six Nations.
  • The confederacy included six nations Mohawk,
    Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Onienda and Tuscarora.

  • The Iroquois remained independent by trading with
    both the British and the French for awhile.
  • By the mid-1700s as the British moved into the
    Ohio Valley the Iroquois were pressured into
    extending special trading rights to the British
    and hesitantly became their Allies.
  • It wouldnt be long before the American Colonists
    would take action.

The Proclamation of 1763
  • Britain issued a warning with the Proclamation of
    1763.
  • To prevent more fighting between the settlers and
    the natives Britain sought to stop westward
    expansion.
  • The Appalachian mountains would act as a western
    boundary for the colonies.
  • This angered individuals who already bought land
    out west.
