• took place from 1692-1693
• a total of 141 people arrested , 19 hanged,1
  crushed
• to death
• servant Tituba cared for Rev. Parriss 9
  year old
• daughter Betty, and 11 year old niece, Abigail
  Williams
• -- she was thought to be from Barbados but
  many
• documents refer to her as Indian, not
  African
• most of afflicted(those who made the
  accusations)
• were young girls, but not all

• Although most of Millers play is generally
  historically
• accurate some facts were changed to adapt
  to the genre.

The McCarthy Hearings  (The Crucible)

• The McCarthy Era
• began with the cold war
• attacks on many in public life became common
• film industry considered too liberal a of
  Hollywood
• directors,writers, actors joined the
  Communist party
• 1947 - 41 witnesses subpoenaed

• By 1951, Sen. McCarthy in full bloom
• the BLACKLIST began to evolve
• more than 320 people fired not permitted to
• work in the industry
• Miller actually wrote The Crucible before
• the McCarthy hearings got into full swing
  and
• several years before he appeared before
  the
• House on UnAmerican Activities Committee.
