  • Mark is a South African who designed a secure

  • He sold his invention and became a billionaire
  • He is only 26
  • He has always wanted to go into space

His work in space
  • Mark is called a space tourist, but this is not
    strictly correct
  • He will be carrying out scientific research while
    on the International Space Station
  • He will blast off on Thursday 24th April on a
    Russian Soyuz spacecraft

Thursday, April 24
  • Mark blasted off from the Gagarin space station
    near Baikonir, Kazakstan this morning at 1226
    Kazakhstan time (0826 South African time).
  • Yuri Gidzenko and Robert Vittori are the two
    professional cosmonauts on the trip.
  • The launch went off without incident

Thursday, 25 April 2002
  • The cosmonauts will carry out general checks and
    maintenance while they find their space feet
  • On Saturday they will dock with the ISS and
    transfer to it

Friday 26 April Day 2
  • The cosmonauts are busy finalising their
    arrangements for docking with the ISS tomorrow
  • Mark is adjusting well to weightlessness

  • The Soyuz and the ISS docked successfully between
    07.57 and GMT 09.20 GMT
  • Mark and his fellows joined with Commander Yury
    Onufrienko and Flight Engineers Carl Walz and Dan

Monday April 29 Day 5
  • Mark spoke to pupils via ham radio, answering
    questions about life on the ISS
  • The ISS passed over East London at 19h20, but it
    was too overcast for us to see him
