CHAPTER 94-part voice leading

• A. Triad inversion doubling rules
• Root position chords double the root
• 1st inversion chords double the soprano (alt.
  bass), if diminished-dbl bass
• 2nd inversion chords double the bass. Use only
  the 4 types of second inversion chords
• B. Voice-leading ideas
• Keep the common tone in same voice, move
  remaining to nearest chord tone.
• Resolve the leading tone to tonic when in an
  outer voice.
• C. Blasted rules!!
• ALWAYS Avoid
• Melodic augmented intervals. Descending d5
  allowed in bass on occasion
• Parallel octaves, 5ths, or unisons
• Doubling the leading tone
• Spacing of more than an octave in upper three
  voices
• Crossed voices
• Try to Avoid
• Overlapping two voices
• Hidden 5th or octave in outer voices
