HELPING WITH HOME READING
  • Encourage regular reading at home
  • Set a good example by reading yourself
  • Plan regular visits to the library

PURPOSE FOR READING( NON-FICTION BOOKS)
Preparing to read.
  • Ensure that the reader knows what they are
    looking for prior to beginning reading
  • Read any questions to be answered before starting
    to read
  • Ask the reader to tell you what they are looking
    for before they begin to read

PURPOSE FOR READING ( FICTION BOOKS)
Preparing to read.
  • Look at the cover titles, pictures and blurb
  • Ask child to predict what the book will be about

HELPING WITH COMPREHENSION
  • Break the text into chunks
  • eg. paragraphs
  • After reading each paragraph ask the child to
    retell what they have read
  • Question the child about key points in the
    paragraph eg names of characters
  • For fiction books, ask them to predict what will
    happen next

  • Students should be visualizing (forming
    pictures in their head as they read) to assist
    their comprehension the RAP method helps with
    this
  • INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS
  • Read one paragraph
  • Ask yourself what you have just read
  • Put it in your own words

LEARNING TO READ THOUGHTFULLY
  • Reciprocal questioning.Steps
  • Student and parent read a passage silently
  • Student asks questions and parent answers
  • Parent asks questions and student answers
  • This is repeated in subsequent paragraphs
  • This process improves questioning skills and
    comprehension.

BOOK POSITIONING??YES! IT DOES MATTER.
  • Correct positioning facilitates tracking skills,
    reduces tiredness increases the speed of
    reading
  • Correct positioning of books reduces eye strain
    and blurring
  • For 99 of readers a book positioned slightly to
    the right of the midline of the body is the ideal

USING COMPUTERS
  • All slides have been prepared using Arial font
  • This font is recommended by the Dyslexia/ Speld
    foundation
  • It is easier to read for all students especially
    those with learning problems
  • HINT Change the default font for Word on your
    computer to Arial

CHANGING FONTS IN WORD
  • Open Word
  • Click on Format select Font
  • In the dialogue box,scroll through the fonts
    select Arial
  • Click on Default
  • A dialogue box will appear asking if youd like
    to change the default font to Arial
  • Click Yes Arial is now the default font for Word

  • This is a selection of simple strategies that can
    be used to help with improving literacy
  • These strategies can be used with all students
  • Copies of these slides are available as handouts
  • Our handouts also provide some strategies for
    helping with spelling
