Title: NAPLAN Test Preparation and Practice

1
NAPLAN Test Preparation and Practice
  • Numeracy Tests

2
Format of Test
  • Two separate tests Numeracy without
    calculator and Numeracy With Calculator
  • Each test of 40 minutes duration
  • Majority of questions are of the Multiple Choice
format no penalty for incorrect answer ( Answer
    all questions)
  • If not Multiple Choice questions require a
written answer usually in form of a number need
to write numbers legibly and clearly

3
Strategies
  • Careful reading of the stimulus material it can
be presented as words, equations, scale diagrams,
    graphs, tables or pictures
  • Careful reading of the question identifying
what the question is asking highlight key words
  • Using the relevant stimulus material to answer
    the question
  • Checking your answer work backwards from the
solution, use estimation techniques to determine
if your answer could be valid

4
Questions based on Graphical Information
  • Read the graph carefully
  • What does the x or horizontal axis represent?
  • What does the y or vertical axis represent?
  • What can be read directly from the graph?
  • What scale is provided on the graph? What does
    one scale division represent?
  • Be careful when reading off values.

5
Questions based on Data Tables
  • Read the table carefully and make sure you
understand what information is being presented
  • Determine what can be read directly from the
    table
  • Make sure that the units in the table correspond
to the units that might be required in the
question If not what is the conversion required

6
Question based on Geometry
  • You will need to have a knowledge of the rules
    that apply
  • Rules for Area, Perimeter and Volumes of
    different shapes
  • Knowledge of terms e.g. Square, rectangular,
    Isosceles triangle, Right angle triangle
  • Knowledge of rules e.g. three angles of a
triangle equal 180 degrees, Sides of square are
of equal lenth, 180 degrees in straight line

7
Questions based on Algebra
  • Do not be put off when you see letters and
    numbers in an equation
  • Need to know rules for expanding an equation e.g.
    2 (b5) 20
  • 2b 10 20
  • 2b 20 10
  • 2b 10
  • b 5

8
Questions based on Probability and Measurement
  • Know terms and their meanings mean, average ,
    mode, probability
  • Measurement ability to read and convert scales

9
Be Test Smart
  • On the non-calculator test the correct answer
should be able to be determined without lengthy
mathematical calculation if you find yourself
doing such a calculation you have probably mis
    read the question
  • Dont get bogged down on one question Leave the
questions that you are having difficulty with and
move on. Remember to go back and retry them and
also to put an answer for every question
