Properties and Uses of Phosphorus
  • Phosphates are used in fertilizers and detergents
  • It is used in metal coatings to prevent it from
    corroding.
  • Phosphorus itself is an important part to all
forms of life since it is part of DNA.
  • We eat about 1 gram of phosphate a day, and we
store about 750 grams in our bodies.
  • Phosphates are compounds made from phosphorus and
are used in the making of special glasses, such
as those used for sodium lamps.
  • Calcium phosphate is used to make fine chinaware.
  • Mono-calcium phosphate is used in baking powder.
  • Phosphorus is a nonmetal solid at room
    temperature.
  • The melting point of phosphorus is 317.3 K or
    44.3 C.
  • Phosphorus boils at 553.7 K, or 280.7 degrees
    Celsius.
  • Its density is 1.82 g/cm3, and it would sink in
    water.
  • In one form its color is a white-yellow
  • Reacts a lot with air it ignites or burns.

Facts about Phosphorus
  • The name comes from the Greek wordphosphoros,wh
ich means bringer of light, because phosphorus
    glows in the dark.
  • It was discovered around 1669 by a German
alchemist named Hennig Brandt during an
experiment where he was attempting to change
    silver into gold.
  • Phosphorus is found in three different forms
ordinary white phosphorus, red phosphorus and
    black phosphorus.
  • It is the 11th most abundant element and it is
found in all fertile soil and most natural
    waters.

Phosphorus (to the tune of the Adams Family
Theme Song)
  • Phosphorus ignites well
  • With five trons in its last shell
  • It helps to make a match smell
  • The element Phosphorus
  • It glows well on a dark night
  • Its ordinarily white
  • Its name means bringer of light
  • Nonmetal phosphorus
  • Its found in fertilizer
  • And most detergentizers
  • For that youll be the wiser
  • The element phosphorus
  • DNAs built around it
  • A German goofed and found it
  • In soil all around us
