Title: Mandrake Linux

1
Installing Mandrake 8.2
  • Mandrake Linux

2
Mandrake Linux 8.2 Requires
  • Mandrake Linux 8.2 requires
  • Pentium processor or compatible
  • CDROM drive
  • At least 32 MB RAM (64MB recommended for
    graphical installation)
  • Mandrake Linux 8.2 can be installed a number of
ways to meet your needs. The two most common (and
    recommended) installation methods are to
  • Boot directly from the Installation CD, or
  • Create a boot floppy if your computer will not
    boot from the CD
  • Several other methods are available in addition
    to a traditional CD-based installation.
    Alternative methods include
  • Network installations -- FTP, HTTP, and NFS
installations require the Installation files be
    located on another networked machine
  • Hard drive installation -- (handy for machines
    that don't have a CD-ROM drive)Hard drive
installations don't require a network connection
all of the Installation files can be located on
    the computer's hard drive
  • PCMCIA Installation -- Primarily for laptops, a
PCMCIA installation enables the use of PCMCIA
devices (such as a PC-card CD-ROM drive or
    network adapter)
  • All of the alternative methods require a special
boot floppy. See the file "install.htm" located
on the Installation CD for details.

3

  • Install or Upgrade !!!

7
Which Way?
Upgrade packages only. This is a simplified way
to upgrade a system that keeps the system's
configuration settings unchanged (such as video
settings, network, etc.).
8
DrakX Partitioning Wizard
9
Suggested Mount Points
10
Recommended
  • The easiest partitioning solution is to erase the
entire disk, but this means that ALL existing
partitions and their data will be lost!
  • After the drive is erased and formatted, the
    Linux partitions are created automatically.

11
Alternate
  • Another convenient option is to let the installer
automatically resize a Windows partition to make
    room for Linux.
  • This option is only for if Windows occupies one
large partition that spans the entire disk.
  • If the disk already has multiple partitions, or
if the PC has more than one hard drive, you'll
need to create Linux partitions using one of the
    other methods.

12
Alternate (Win)
  • You'll see a final warning that Scandisk and
Defrag should be performed on a drive before
    resizing a Windows partition.
  • And as always, make sure you have backed up any
important data that you cannot afford to lose
    before proceeding.
  • The installer will then shrink the Windows
    partition and automatically create Linux
    partitions.

13
Custom Partitioning
  • A final option is called "Custom disk
partitioning" -- this launches DiskDrake, the
    graphical disk partitioner.
  • An example of partitioning with DiskDrake can be
    seen on the next pages.

14
Resizing Partitions
  • This animation shows how to easily resize a
    Windows partition.
  • NOT Recommended on a W2K box!
  • 1) Select the Windows partition by clicking on it
with the mouse. The Windows FAT partition is
    displayed in blue.
  • 2) Select the "Resize" button.
  • 3) An alert reminds you to backup important data
    before proceeding.
  • 4) Choose the new size for Windows after
shrinking it. In this example, Windows is left
    with 3GB.
  • 5) A new empty partition is created.

15
Resizing Partitions Cont.
  • 6) Select the new empty partition and choose the
"Auto allocate" button to automatically create
    Linux partitions.
  • 7) Choose "Done" and write the changes to disk.
  • That's it!

16
Pre-sorted Package Selection
  • From this window, select software packages to
    install based on pre-sorted groups.
  • Pause the cursor over a listing for a description
    of that group.

17
Server Apps
  • If any "server" applications were chosen to be
installed, you will be shown a reminder that they
will be activated as soon as the system boots up.

18
Progress Meter
  • Software installation will proceed automatically,
    displaying progress bars until complete.

19
Intuitive Eject!
  • Mandrake Linux 8.2 is commonly distributed on
multiple CD-ROMs. If the installer requires
packages from another CD, it will eject the
current disk and prompt you to insert another one
    if necessary.
  • If you don't have the CD that is being requested,
    just hit the "Cancel" button.

20
ROOT
  • Next you'll be asked to supply a password for the
    "root" account.
  • The root account is used for system maintenance,
and has complete access to the resources and
settings of a computer. This account should only
be used when necessary and is not for daily use.

Network Conf Wizard
  • The Network Configuration Wizard allows you to
    easily configure Internet/Network settings.
  • Sets up Eth0, Modem, etc.

24
Connection Types
  • From this screen you can choose to configure
various types of network connections. Any network
devices that were automatically detected will be
    listed as such.
  • Choose a network type.

25
Alert Window
  • An alert window is displayed when the installer
is ready to begin configuring the local network
    connection.

26
IP Configuration
  • Enter the IP configuration for this machine, or
choose "Automatic IP" if the network interface is
to be configured with BOOTP or DHCP.

27
IP Related Configuration
  • Enter your fully-qualified domain name, DNS
server and gateway settings (if any).
  • The Host name and Gateway entries can be left
blank if it does not apply to your PC.
  • The network settings will then be applied.

28
Summary
  • The "Summary" window displays a list of settings
that can be changed if not accurate.
  • Change the value by selecting the appropriate
    button.

29
Printers
  • The printer can be probed either automatically
(with auto-detection) or manually. Some computers
can lock-up during auto-detection, but most
modern printers can be safely detected by the
    installer.

30
Manual Printer Setup
  • Manual setup of printers.
  • If the printer wasn't detected, you may need to
specify which port it is using.

31
Printer Description
  • Each printer needs a unique name associated with
it the default name will simply be "Printer".
  • If you have more than one printer to configure,
the additional printers also need their own
    unique names.

32
Printer Model
  • If you don't see your printer's exact model in
the list of printer drivers, try a similar or
    generic type.
  • Paper size and resolution will be next.
  • Then do you want to setup a new printer?
  • Print Test Page?

33
Package Updates
  • By the time you install Mandrake Linux 8.2 on
your PC, it is likely that some software packages
have been updated since the initial release.
  • This requires a working Internet connection.

34
Choose a Site
35
Choosing Packages
  • Choose individual software packages by selecting
the checkbox after the package name, then press
    the "Install" button.

36
Package Download
  • The selected packages will then be downloaded and
    installed onto your machine.

37
Boot Loader
  • The Linux bootloader will then be automatically
installed onto the master boot record (MBR).
  • Note if you already use a boot manager that
you'd like to keep (such as System Commander,
BootMagic, NT bootloader, etc.), choose an Expert
installation instead of Recommended so that you
can choose where to install the Linux bootloader.

38
Video and Resolution
  • DrakX will detect your computer's video card and
probe the capabilities of the monitor.
  • If for some reason a device wasn't recognized,
you may need to specify the monitor and/or video
    card.

39
POP! Not!
  • Then choose your desired resolution and color
    depth for the display.
  • Press the "Show all" button to dispay a complete
list of all the available resolutions.

40
Yes or No???
  • The display will be tested and this test screen
    should appear.
  • If your display doesn't appear correctly, choose
"No" from this window to try some alternative
    settings

41
  • Congratulations, that's the end of the
    installation.
  • But before rebooting the system, this is a good
time to create an emergency boot floppy.
  • Select the green circle in the left panel next to
"Create a bootdisk" near the bottom of the list.

42
Making a Bootdisk
  • A custom boot floppy provides a way to boot into
your Mandrake system without depending on the
Linux bootloader should it ever get damaged or
    corrupt.
  • Note The Installation CD also contains a rescue
system press F1 at the boot prompt to access
    Rescue mode.

43
Congratulations
44
LILO
  • LILO is the graphical bootloader for Mandrake
    Linux 8.2.
  • After your computer starts up, use the keyboard's
cursor keys to select which operating system to
    boot into and hit "Enter".
  • If Windows is also installed on the PC, it will
appear as an option in the boot menu.
