wireless network via your system or a Mac Airport
    wireless router.

market wireless routers and access points.
  • We will learn how to configure these devices
through there built in web interface.

7

  • The Apple Airport Utility can be used to scan for
wireless network, and connect to it.

8

information about your system network adapter
    (nic card).
  • The utility also has several tools to check
    network connectivity.

9

Disk Utility
  • The Mac Disk Utility is a multipurpose tool used
    for several system functions.
  • Repairing Disk permissions and checking for disk
errors. Click on your systems hard drive in the
left pane of the Disk Utility. You will see
several options open in the right pane of the
utility including First Aid, Erase and,
    Partition.

12
Disk Utility Continued
  • Creating Disk Images. This feature can be used to
create file backups as well as complete system
backups. (System backups are better performed
using third party utilities and external hard
    drives i.e. Carbon Copy Cloner).
  • The disk utility can be used for burning CDs as
    well.

13
Migration Assistant
  • The Migration Assistant is a utility for moving
files from an older Mac or external hard drive
    backup to a new Mac.
  • Migration Assistant will only work for moving
files from Macs that have firewire connections. A
6 pin firewire cable is needed to use Migrations
    Assistant

14
Migration Assistant Continued
  • A good rule of thumb for using Migration
Assistant is to not have accounts on the two
machines (or external hard drive backup) with
matching names. If your systems do have matching
name accounts one will need to be renamed.
  • The migration assistant is a great tool for easy
setup of new system as well as recovering a
    crashed system.

15
Migration Assistant Continued
  • Migration Assistant not only moves over system
accounts and passwords it moves over
    applications, and serial numbers.

Booting the Mac to Drive Selection Mode.
  • To boot the Mac to drive selection mode. Boot the
system and hold the alt/option. This will open
the Mac in boot disk selection mode.
  • This is very handy when with new Intel based Macs
    with an XP partition.

18
Booting your Mac as a Firewire drive.
  • To boot your Mac as a external firewire drive
boot the system while holding the T key.

19
Booting the system from a install CD and using
the Disk Utility
  • Use the selection mode boot to get to the install
CD. This can also be accomplished by putting the
CD in the system and holding the c key.
  • Once the system is booted from the CD you can
navigate the utility menu to select the Disk
Utility to format your systems hard drive. This
would be done to remove all files from a drive or
to do a fresh install of the operating system.
