  • Installer has a built-in ability to test the
    integrity of the install media.
  • type linux mediacheck at the boot prompt.
  • The installation program no longer uses the frame
    buffer X server for graphical installation
  • isolinux is now used for booting the CD
  • Now possible to specify the boot order of your
    drives (grub only).
  • components file comps has been replaced by an
    XML-based file comps.xml

  • Now possible to perform a network installation
    after booting from the CD.
  • Type linux askmethod at the boot prompt
  • Installation program automatically configures a
    USB mouse even if a USB mouse is not present at
    installation time so, whenever a USB mouse is
    inserted, it will be functional.
  • Now possible to install from an IEEE-1394
    (FireWire) CD-ROM device. It requires being able
    to boot from the CD-ROM device.

  • Allows individual packages to be selected.
  • Upgrade option as before.
  • Install Everything 4680 Mb!
  • Lots of extra components are included like
    anaconda, Red Hat add-ons etc.

Disk Partitioning
  • Logical Volume Manager Support (LVM)
  • Allows logical volumes to be built from separate
    physical disks.
  • Very similar to HP-UX LVM.
  • Boot partition may not be under LVM control
  • File systems are now labeled and referenced
    within grub.conf/lilo.conf
  • Fdisk, Disk Druid and Automatic Partitioning
    still supported
  • /boot is now automatically adjusted to be 100Mb
    in size.

Command line options
  • Extra command line options during install
  • boot linux reiserfs boot linux jfs allow the
    choice of these file systems during install
  • boot linux askmethod allows supported network
    installation options to be chosen.
  • boot linux mediacheck allows the media to be
    checked.

GRUB Selection Screen
  • Utility to allow disks to be swapped
  • Allows selection of boot disk from mixed disk
    systems
  • SCSI IDE disks
  • Separate Windows boot disks that are not the
    primary disk within the system
  • Selection is not available from within lilo.
  • Lilo remains untouched.

Minor Changes
  • Firewall selection is configuring iptables.
  • TimeZone selection screen now only shows World
    map.
  • Keyboard selection, Mouse, Language, root
    password, authentication screens remain
    un-changed.

Software Selection Screen.
  • Each Selection allows individual optional
    selections to be chosen.
  • New separate layout for Applications, Server,
    Office tools etc.
  • Minimal selection option for firewalls, router
    machines.
  • New Select all screen for everything (4680Mb!)
  • Individual packages and selection checking as
    before.

Install process
  • Install progresses as previously.
  • On first boot, new Red Hat start-up agent
    included.
  • Allows the following to be configured/set
  • Date and Time
  • Sound Card
  • Update Agent
  • Load additional CDs
  • Finish Setup
  • Date/Time screen allows ntpd configuration
  • Sound configuration screen replaces sndconfig and
    attempts to configure sound card correctly.
  • Update agent screens allows the system to be
    registered on http//rhn.redhat.com
