Summary
Cole Mathews begins the story filled with anger,
rage, and hate. Cole has been stealing and
fighting for many of years. This time he caught
Peter Driscal off guard in the parking lot and
smashed his head against the sidewalk. Now,
Peter will always have permanent damage to his
brain Cole is in the biggest trouble of his
life. Cole is offered Circle Justice which is
a system based on Native American traditions that
attempts to provide healing for the criminal
offender, the victim, and the community. With
prison as his only alternative, Cole plays along.
He says he wants to repent, but in his heart,
Cole blames his alcoholic mom, his abusive dad,
wimpy Peter-everyone but himself-for his
situation. Cole receives a one-year banishment to
a remote Alaskan island. There, he is mauled by a
mysterious white bear of Native American legend.
Hideously injured, Cole waits for death. His
whole future changes when he learns to let go of
his anger and live peacefully with others.

Circle of Justice
The Circle of Justice in the novel is where Cole
and his parents told what happened. Cole told his
story about beating up Peter. Peter and his
parents were there. The Circle of Justice
provided help to both Peter and Cole. They
discussed what Cole did and what he should have
done instead. The Circle of Justice also provided
another option for Cole instead of Jail, so that
he could learn a lesson. Everyone in the Circle
of Justice discussed possibilities that would be
a good decision for both Peter and Cole. The
final decision was to place Cole on an island
where he could learn to work out his anger and
learn more about himself.
