Technology Trends Enhancing Possibilities in
E-Marketing
  • Greater miniaturization, speed, portability
  • Greater connectivity and continuing convergence
    of computing and communications
  • Greater use of digitized information and
    multimedia
  • Better software techniques and interfaces with
    people Atler, p35

6
E-Business Infrastructure
  • Infrastructure the basic structure that allows a
system to operate. Including lines, browsers,
    computers, servers, etc.
  • Bandwidth the line limit for digital information
  • BPS bits per second unit of measure for
    transmission speed
  • Browser is the interface between the Web content
    and the user
  • Domain name the name that is used to access an
    internet site
  • Firewalls are security measures designed to
prevent hackers from gaining access through a
    server to a Web site.
  • ISP Internet Service Provider, the means of
going online or linking to the Internet backbone
    that Internet users must have.

7
Internet Protocols
  • TCP/IP Is a set of transport control protocol
standards that are used on the internet.
  • E-mail Allows for the transport of text between
    users on the Internet
  • Transparent and integrated into Internet
    applications
  • FTP Allows computer files or software to be
transferred online, also allows for attachments
    in email
  • Telnet Allows a computer to connect to another
computer system, in essence becoming one of their
terminals allowing for data packet exchanges.
  • USENET a place for online discussions like a
    chat room Kleindl, p.26

8
Worldwide Web Protocols
  • WWW Set of standards that allows hyperlinks and
graphics to move through the Internet
  • HTTP Protocol on the Web that allows linking to
other sites and retrieving of information
  • HTML Text-based markup language set of codes
    allowing for fonts, position, colors,etc
  • VRML Displays and rotates 3-D models
  • CGI Interface linking other programs to Web
server, ex when form used to collect info
  • URL Address that is used to find a site at a
    server on the Web
  • SET Protocols that allow secure purchases on
    the Internet Kleindl, p. 37

9
Home Internet Delivery Options
  • Modem Modulating/demodulating changes analog
signals to digital and back. Used to connect
    twisted pair phone lines.
  • T1 or T3 Carrier line allows digital
    information to be sent
  • DSL Digital Subscriber Line allows digital
signals on twisted pair phone lines (DSL modem)
    ex. Bellsouth
  • Cable Used with coaxial (TV) cables and cable
    modem ex. Comcast, Knology
  • Direct Broadcast Satellite Data moved from
Internet backbone to satellite gateway and then
bounced off the satellite to small dish. Requires
    return line through phone line
  • G3 Cellular Phone Allows information to be sent
digitally, broadband connection to any device
that can access cellular network Kleindl,
    p.30-31

10
Web Browser Languages and Plug-ins
  • HTML Allows for fonts, positions, colors etc.
  • DHTML Allows for movement and layering of text
    and images multimedia effects
  • XML adds intelligence to pages rendering
    integration less of a problem
  • JAVA Allows for programming applets
  • Plug-Ins (Examples)
  • Video downloads and plays video Apple
    Computers QuickTime
  • Video and Audio Streams in video and audio
    RealNetworks
  • Multimedia Streaming multimedia and interactive
    games Macromedias Shockwave, Coldfusion
  • Chat Real-time text conversations GlobalChat
  • IP Telephony/VoIP Phone calls over the Internet
Envisions Click2Coach demo, Skype Kleindl, p.

11
Whats Slowing Down Innovation?
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Difficulty building and modifying information
    systems
  • Integration of different systems
  • Organizational inertia and resistance to change
  • Difficulty anticipating future Atler p. 35

12
Whod a Thought
  • Wired homes wireless networked homes
  • Lost and need directions GPS in cars
  • Satellite linkups ex. telemedicine
  • Chips implanted in family pets
  • Dick Tracey watches/Wireless handhelds
  • Consumer created records/newspapers
  • Consumers designing computers, clothes, creating
    personalized childrens books

13
Geek Gadgets becoming Mainstream
Phone, Email, Web, Camera, MP3, IM,PDA
Biometric PCMCIA fingerprint password
Swiss Army w/ USB
Digital photo frame
Watch, PC, PDA
14
Back to the Future
  • VoIP rendering long distance phone companies
    obsolete ex. Skype, Net Meeting
  • RFID collecting customer data information down to
the item level ex. Walmart and Target at the
    pallet level
  • Everyone has their own PDA /GPS communication
devise that they wear on their wrist (PC watch)
  • Customer profiles stored on smartcards associated
to your wireless telecommunication (cell phone or
    watch)
  • Cell phones with wireless smartcard technology
that you can pay for items ex. Samsung, Nokia
  • TV access on your cell phone. Ex. Mobil Broadcast
    Service Initiative
  • Technology allowing for personalized billboards
