Industrialem Genova, 28 Ottobre 2004
2 Present ASME Structure Relating to NDE in CS
- Council of Codes Standards
- Section V, Subcommittee V
- Volumetric Methods
- Surface Examination methods
- General Requirements/Personnel Qualifications and
Inquiries
- Council of Engineering - Pressure Technology
Group - NDE Engineering Division
- Pressure Vessel and Piping Division
- Pipeline Systems Division
3 New Technology being considered by ASME CS
- Ultrasonic techniques
- TOFD Flaw Sizing
- Electromagnetic Techniques
- ACFM Techniques
- Remote Field Eddy Current
- Radiographic Techniques
- Filmless Radiography
4Time-of-Flight Flaw Sizing (Moles, 2004A)
5 CS Activity in Ultrasonics
- TOFD Flaw Sizing
- Presented to the technical world in 1970s.
- Limited computer capacity slowed the adoption of
the technique. - Cowfer and Hedden (1991) compared effectiveness
of TOFD to amplitude down techniques. - ASME Code Case 2235 approved 1996 and 2001.
- Standard Practice for Use of the Time-of-Flight
Diffraction Technique, being considered as
mandatory for Sec. V Appendix III of Article 4.
6 Alternating Current Field Measurement (Topp, 2000)
Current flow and magnetic field around a defect
7Remote Field Eddy Current (Bray and Stanley,
1997)
8 CS Activities in Electromagnetics
- Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM)
- Work continues on developing the requirements for
ACFM in Section V as new Article 15. - Remote Field Eddy Current
- Subcommittee V approved Remote Field Testing
Requirements into Section V as new Article 17. - Magnetic Flux Leakage
- Requirements in Section V will be moved from
Appendix III Article 7 to new Article 16.
9 Filmless Radiography (H. Thiele, H. J. Friemel,
2000)
10 CS Activities in Filmless Radiography
- Sec. V, Appendix VIII approved by RT working
group committee allows use of phosphorous plates
in lieu of conventional film sheets. - Code Case 2476 when included in the next Addendum
in 2005 will allow using either phosphorous
sheets or film. - Sec. XI is following a similar path.
11 Opportunities for Input into CS
- ASME CS Committees are staffed by volunteer
engineers.
- CS Committees are seeking new members.
- Committee membership is open to non ASME
members.
- NDE Engineering Division offers participation
in NDE research and industry activities.
