9The chimney would rise in temperature and crack
the brick at any fault line, so the designers had
to increase the surface area outside the chimney
to allow the air to take the heat away. Obviously
Tudors were show-offs and it was show of wealth
how many chimneys you had, now marry them both
together and you get the following
explanation. The chimneys had to be cooled easily
with fluted designs because the bricks had lots
of faults in them, the show of wealth by how many
chimneys you had was elaborated by the fancy
designs you used to cool them. The chimneys
joined at the top because of their height
relative to their thickness and it was mainly for
stability but again elaborately done to show
wealth.
