7
The Article 12 Council
  • Following on from the success of the Young
persons panel in Oxford it was thought that one
should be set up in Buckinghamshire

8
So why are we here?
  • United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
    Child (was created in 1989)
  • Britain signed up to them in 1991
  • Has 42 Articles rights for Under 18s
  • Rights to Protect us
  • Rights to Provide things for us
  • Rights to help us take Part in things
  • Article 12 is particularly important

9
Article 12 from UNCRC states
  • Children and young people
  • have a right to be
  • involved in decisions
  • that affect them
  • Our name should make sense now

10
We also know that
  • It is very important to the NHS and CAMHS to
    involve people more
  • In the planning
  • In the development
  • In the evaluation of their service
  • To make our services better!

11
We received training in
  • Childrens Rights
  • How to run a successful meeting
  • Different levels of Participation
  • Why its important to include under 18s in
    decision making in CAMHS
  • All this wouldve been impossible without an
    external participation worker.

12
You cant expect young people to know what they
are doing, no, you have to train them first
then they can get on with it
  • Quote from a 13 yr old talking about young people
    running advisory panels

13
Matts bit
  • Anxiety Do I have the skills to make this
    meaningful?
  • What if I cant deliver what they want?
  • Letting go of power and control
  • Time and organisation
  • It is fun but tiring
  • Get support

Matt and Chiks top ten tips (cont)
  • 6 Get buy in and support from senior managers
  • 7 Gate keep incoming work
  • 8 Get an external expert to get things rolling
  • 9 Formality, structure and contract
  • 10 REWARDS..

16
Why we think its important to be involved in
decision making in CAMHS
  • It is a service for us!
  • Under 18s need to be more involved
  • Adults want to know what we think
  • Under 18s need a chance to express their views
  • We understand what we need
  • Its important because some children cant speak
    for themselves

17
...The contract
  • Is made up of our terms of reference,
    guidelines, vision statement rewards policy
  • At a recent conference we presented our contract
to key adults in the trust
  • We ran out of space for people who wanted to sign
    up!!

18
Our first project
  • Developing a questionnaire for service users
    about their experience of CAMHS
  • There is already an Experience of Service
    Questionnaire around but,
  • Its TOO BASIC and TOO VAGUE
  • Its TOO BLAND and BORING
  • Therefore we decided to make a new one!

19
We thought the Service Questionnaire (SQ) needs
to
  • Ask questions WE think are important
  • Be available in a variety of formats
  • Be available on-line
  • Be accessible to young children
  • And under 18s of all abilities
  • BE FUN AND INTERESTING TOO

20
But we also wanted it to
  • Give an opportunity for under 18s to voice their
    opinions
  • Let under 18s realise CAMHS listen to their views
  • Article 12 Council will take those views to key
adults in CAMHS and together with the adults -
    make CAMHS a better service!

21
We have promised the under 18swho fill in the
survey
  • To write a newsletter to them every 6 months to
    tell them
  • Who we have talked to on their behalf
  • How their views are changing things and if they
    havent changed
  • Why it hasnt changed
  • Also let them know our future plans

22
Finally our future plans
  • Roll out of questionnaire
  • Recruitment of new members
  • Employment of a participation worker

23
And finally
