character knows, feels, thinks, and says.

- Emotions can be expressed by a characters
actions and words. - An author can help readers see a characters
emotions through what a character says or does.

the heart of New York City.

- Reading Plays is different from reading other
types of material. - A short play is divided into parts called scenes.
- At the beginning of each scene, the author
describes the setting and tells what the
characters are doing. - Each characters name is written in capital
letters followed by a colon before the words he
or she speaks. - Instructions tell characters what to do are
called stage directions. They are printed in
italics.
