What is needed to bowl?
  • You need to go to a bowling alley
  • Next you need a special pair of shoes
  • Can rent these from the bowling alley
  • Could buy your own
  • You need to select a ball
  • Again you can use the bowling alleys
  • Could buy your own

The ball
  • The bowling ball comes in many different sizes
  • Try to select a weight you can handle
  • Try to select a ball that has finger holes that
    fit your fingers
  • Otherwise your fingers will stick
  • Proper fit
  • Need to fit your thumb, and two middle fingers

How to bowl
  • Bowlers generally use a 3,4,or 5 step approach
  • Cue words for the 3 step are
  • Push the ball OUT
  • SWING the ball back
  • BOWL the ball down the lane
  • Bend at your knees
  • Bend at waist
  • Slide on the foot opposite of the hand you hold
    the bowling ball
  • The 4 or 5 step approach is simply one or two
    extra steps followed by the 3 step

Aim
  • Right handed bowlers aim for 1 3 pocket
  • Left handed bowlers aim for 1 2 pocket

Bowling Terms
  • Alley The surface on which the ball is rolled
  • Brooklyn (also known as a crossover) refers to a
    ball that crosses over to the other side of the
    headpin opposite the side it was thrown
  • Channel (also known as the gutter) the grooves
    or drop-off area on each side of the bowling
    surface
  • Perfect game To roll 12 strikes in a row. Also
    known as a 300 game
  • Double To roll 2 strikes in a row
  • Turkey To roll 3 strikes in a row
  • Four Bagger To roll 4 strikes in a row
  • Dutch 200 To alternate strikes and spares or
    spares and strikes throughout the game. Is
    scored as a 200 game.

More terms
  • Delivery The rolling of the ball
  • Curve ball a ball thrown with spin that follows
    a wide arc toward the pins.
  • Head Pin The number one pin
  • King Pin The number 5 pin. It is a key pin to
    produce a strike
  • Leave Pins left standing after the first ball
    has been rolled.
  • Lofting Throwing the ball too high above the
    lane bed.
  • Mixer A ball that creates a lot of pin action.

  • Strike Knocking down all 10 pins with the first
    ball
  • Spare Knocking down all 10 pins using 2 balls
  • Open Failing to knock down all 10 pins using 2
    balls

Other Scoring Terms
  • Gutter Ball To roll the ball into the channel
    resulting in zero pins being knocked down
  • Split To roll the ball in such a way as to
    leave pins standing with space for other pins
    between them
  • Miss Failure to knock down any pins with the
    ball
  • Foul Touching the line or going beyond the line
    in any way when delivering the ball

Bowling Math
  • Open merely add the total pins knocked down.
  • Spare 10 plus a bonus consisting of the number
    of pins knocked down on the next ball.

If an open occurs the bowler is finished. Merely
add the total pins knocked down. If a spare
occurs the bowler is entitled to roll one more
ball. Add 10 plus the bonus of the pins on the
next ball. If a strike occurs the bowler is
entitled to roll two more balls. Add 10 plus the
bonus of the pins on the next two balls.

Calculating Handicap
  • Handicapping is a means of placing bowlers and
    teams with varying degrees of skill on as
    equitable a basis as possible for their
    competition against each other.

Calculating Handicap
  • KEY
  • SCORE Equals your actual score for the
    games you bowl
  • TOTAL PINS Equals your score for the day
    plus all prior scores
  • AVERAGE Equals your total pins divided by
    the number of games you have played
    Remember to carry the average to the tenth
    and round it to the whole number
  • HANDICAP See the back side of the record
    sheet to determine your handicap
  • SCORE WITH Equals your actual score for the game
    plus your handicap pins
  • HANDICAP
