The IBO
  • Educating the Head and the Heart
  • August 2005
  • The IBO is a non-profit educational foundation
    that was established in 1968 by a small group of
    international schools with geographically mobile
    students. They wanted a common curriculum and
    university entry credential. This was during the
    Cold War period. The IBO also had a vision for
    developing certain types of students for a more
    global world requiring greater understanding.
    Today IB programmes exist in internationally-minde
    d schools for students 3 years to 19 years of
    age.

IBO Mission Statement
  • The International Baccalaureate Organisation
    aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and
    caring young people who help to create a better
    and more peaceful world through intercultural
    understanding and respect.
  • To this end the IBO works with schools,
    governments and international organisations to
    develop challenging programmes of international
    education and rigorous assessment.
  • These programmes encourage students across the
    world to become active, compassionate and
    lifelong learners who understand that other
    people, with their differences, can also be
    right.

Diploma Programme. Ages 16-19 two year
programme
  • A pre-university course that leads to
    examinations.
  • All students complete six subjects, each scored
    out of seven, plus the Extended Essay and Theory
    of Knowledge which earns up to three bonus
    points, and CAS. (ie max of 45 points)

Diploma Teaching Hours
  • SL subjects minimum 150 hrs over two years
  • HL subjects minimum 240 hrs over two years
  • TOK minimum 100 hrs over two years
  • EE minimum 60 hrs over two years
  • CAS minimum 150 hrs over two years
  • This equates with approximately 23 formal class
    contact hours per week plus EE/CAS

Diploma Qualification
  • Each subject awarded seven points maximum
  • 3 HL 3 SL 42 points maximum
  • TOK EE 3 points maximum

  • CAS completion required for award of the
    qualification
  • 24 points minimum required, with certain
    conditions, for award of qualification. NB. not
    all students get the DP
  • IB Scores can be converted to a UAR see
    www.aaibs.org

DP Requirements
  • Students must
  • Study three Higher level (HL) courses - 240 hours
    each
  • Study three Standard level (SL) courses- 150
    hours each
  • Complete the requirements for Creativity Action
    Service (CAS)- 150 hours, at least 50 hours of
    each element
  • Complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and
    write an essay- at least 100 hours
  • Write an Extended Essay (EE) on a topic of their
    choice- approximately 40 hours
  • Must do six exams in Year 12 with a maximum of 2
    anticipated subjects

  • The Diploma also contains areas specifically
    designed to contribute to a holistic education
  • Extended Essay (EE)- paper / original research
    (up to 4000 words)
  • Creativity Action Service (CAS)- experiential
    learning (150 hours)
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)- connections between
    subject areas / academic disciplines (100 hours
    seminar course)

  • Students are required to complete both Internal
    and External Assessments
  • External Assessments are held in May and November
    (2500 examiners worldwide)
  • Both Internal and External use of established
    grading criteria
  • Multiple methods of assessment for each course,

  • - student portfolios
  • - class presentations
  • - practical lab work
  • - mathematical investigations
  • - artistic performances
  • Varied skills tested across disciplines
