Motivation
  • The digital world of the Grid meets the physical
world through a variety of sensors, instruments
    and interfaces
  • Projects in the e-Science programme have
increasingly become aware of the need to focus on
this digital-physical interface of the grid
  • The ubiquitous computing community is looking
towards the Grid for aspects of processing, data
    handling, integration and access
  • There is also interest in applying middleware
    techniques across these distributed computing
    domains

4
Objective
  • The objective of this workshop is to bring
    together researchers and practitioners across
these fields and identify research agendas which
bring together ubiquitous computing and e-Science
  • It seems to me the UK is ahead of the field
how can we together conduct internationally
    leading research in this area?

5
Background
  • e-Science projects have touched on this space
  • Equator IRC
  • CombeChem
  • Usability Task Force

6
Background
  • Strategic reports have identified this space
  • Computer Science Challenges to Emerge from
    e-Science
  • Next Generation Grids 2 - Requirements and
Options for European Grids Research 2005-2010 and
    Beyond
  • Andsurely Moores Law implies we need to think
    about this(?!)

7
Story so far
  • Birds of Feather session at e-Science All-Hands
meeting in September 2004 (who was there?)
  • This followup workshop organised with help from
  • Tom Rodden, Nottingham
  • Morris Sloman, Imperial College
  • Oliver Storz, Lancaster
  • Ian Marshall, Kent
  • Peter Dickman, Glasgow
  • Omer Rana, Cardiff
  • and Nicky Harding (e-Science and EnviSense)

Ambient Intelligence and The Grid
A Framework for discussion
15
Seven aspects of symbiosis
  • Devices need the Grid for computation
  • Devices need the Grid for integration
  • The Grid needs devices to interface with the
    physical world
  • Virtualisation
  • The information systems perspective
  • Grid computation on networks of devices
  • Self-Organisation

Some Options
  • Workshop report, to go into NeSC Technical Report
    Series
  • EPSRC Network
  • Transfer experimental techniques, models and
    scientific insights
  • Promote mobility between academe, universities
    and industry
  • Networks are expected to lead to new
    collaborative multidisciplinary research
    proposals
  • EPSRC will provide a total of 60,000 for a
maximum of three years to cover the operating and
    support costs
  • EPSRC Research in the Usability Challenges to
    Emerge from e-Science
