- Humberto started as a tropical storm in the warm
waters of the Gulf of Mexico near a 450-km-long
(270 mi) stretch of the coasts of Texas and
Louisiana. - Humberto set a record when it was transformed in
less than 18 hours from a tropical storm to a
category 1 hurricane with 135 km/hr (80 mi/hr)
winds. - Humberto arrived in Texas 13 days after 107th
anniversary of Galveston hurricane.

6PLANNING FOR HURRICANE HUMBERTO
- In their emergency response planning, Texas and
Louisiana officials considered Humberto to be a
rain event, not an evacuation event. -
7PLANNING FOR HURRICANE HUMBERTO
- Texas was already water logged from heavy rains
from Tropical Storm Erin. - Expecting extensive flooding, Texas Governor Rick
Perry added additional assets by activating 50
military vehicles with 200 soldiers, 6
helicopters, and 2 swift-water rescue teams. - Crews from the US Coast Guad were placed on
standby.
8HURRICANE HUMBERTOS LANDFALL
- Humberto made landfall near High Island, TX near
the Texas-Louisiana border. - Landfall was only 84 km (50 miles) from the
location of Hurricane Ritas landfall in 2005. - Areas of Louisiana still have not fully recovered
from Hurricane Rita.
