WHO ARE WE STUDYING?
  • Cohorts of New Students from
  • Each Fall Beginning in 2002 (Our
    Benchmark Year)
  • Containing All New Degree/Certificate-Seeking
Students (Those Who Declare or Say they Intend
    to Seek)
  • Both Full-Time and Part-Time
  • Both Freshmen and Transfer

Achieving the Dream Community Colleges Count
  • Who to Include in the Cohort
  • Include all degree/certificate-seeking
    undergraduate students (full-and part-time)
entering your institution for the first time
during the fall term. Students must be enrolled
in courses creditable toward a degree, diploma,
certificate, or other formal award. Include
students enrolled in courses that are part of a
    vocational or occupational program, including
those enrolled in off-campus centers and those
    enrolled in distance learning/home study
programs. Be sure to include students taking
remedial courses if the student is considered
degree-seeking for the purpose of student
    financial aid determination.

Additional Information
  • SFCC Grad Rate is under 10 compared to 25 for
most CCs (but so is the average for the states
    CCs.)
  • Only 6 students of the Lumina Cohort in Fall 2002
were employed on campus their first semester
  • Part-Time students in the Lumina Cohort have
    lower persistence rates.
  • Males in general, and young Hispanic Males in
    particular have lower persistence rates

10
Additional Information
  • Students who did not complete the Fall term or
who earned no credits differed significantly from
    those who did .
  • 54 students of 324 fell into this category
  • More likely to be male, under 25, Hispanic,
attending part-time, in need of remediation.
  • Less likely to be on financial aid
  • Much more likely to have no high school grades on
    file at SFCC

  • If you do what you always do
  • You will get what you always got
  • - Kenneth W. Jenkins, Pres. Yonkers NAACP
  • As quoted by Mark Friedman of the Fiscal Policy
Studies Institute at a Workshop presented at SFCC

Additional Research Questions
  • Does Fall 03 Cohort Follow the Same Patterns?
  • Do we see trends in retention and graduation
    rates by gender and/or ethnicity/age/part-time/ful
    l-time status over past years?
  • Do students who take their Math course after
first semester succeed at higher rates?
