1
electronic Plant data Management
ABOUT THE CLIENT Client is a Nuclear Power
plant, with 1000 MW power production, and is the
second largest Nuclear plant in Switzerland and
caters to 40 of the countrys electrical supply
need.

THE NEED FOR DRAWING MANAGEMENT SOLUTION The
Nuclear plant maintains totally over 40,000
drawings of PI, SFD, FCD and other operators
training drawings. These drawings, as electronic
version and hardcopy version must be available
for use by design / documentation / maintenance
and operation engineers within the plant. The
Records management departments at the Nuclear
Power Plants needed a way to provide users access
to drawing documents while still keeping the
original drawing documents in permanent storage
facilities. They were electronic drawing
documents and distributing them around the plants
at many locations. This method of providing
access required them to have a team of people
dedicated to copying and distributing the paper
and then keeping them updated to the current
versions.

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM The Nuclear power plant,
outsourced the requirement to an Indian Company,
and a solution was implemented by a team led by a
Project Manager from 1997 - 2001 Phase I Using
MDL application for the PI diagram conversion
(.dgn), report generation (.rpt) and exporting
the data to a RDBMS backend. The steps followed
were, Standard Templates and symbol
library were created and approved by Client for
creating all PI diagrams. Various
functions were developed for checking the
connectivity of piping and flow across the
equipments. From the paper
drawings, initial report will be generated on the
list of symbols to be used and drawing
methodology. Based on the report CAD
Engineers will draw the diagram using the MDL
application. QC Engineers will
validate the connectivity and adhering to various
checklists, report file will be generated.
Client engineers integrated the .rpt
file into Oracle backend. Project Duration 30
Man Months No.off Drawings implemented 1500
PID (Piping Instrumentation Diagrams)

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM Phase II Using MDL
application for the SFD diagram conversion
(.dgn), dynamic validation and exporting the
data to a RDBMS backend. The steps followed
were, Standard Templates and symbol
library were identified, created and approved by
Client for creating all SFD diagrams.
Various functions were developed for placing the
symbols, drawing the wires, connecting the wires,
placing the signal data and establishing signal
connectivity. From the paper
drawings, initial report will be generated on the
list of symbols to be used and drawing
methodology. Panels drawings were
first drawn and approved by clients after
validating at the client site with the existing
panels and control boards circuitry.
SFD drawings will be drawn strictly based on the
approved equipments from the panels data base
CAD Engineers will draw the diagram using
the MDL application and run the validation tool
to do checklist. Drawing will be
sent to the client place, client engineers will
check and approve. QC Engineers will
export the drawing data into Oracle. Project
Duration 208 Man Months No.off Drawings
implemented 30,000 SFD (Signal Flow diagrams)

  • Achievements
  • Client had a compulsory need to reduce cost of
production, in view of the common European
council formation and competition from other
    vendors.
  • The client now has a Intelligent drawing
management platform, which provides a critical
link within the organization for seamless
    exchange of drawings and data.
  • Huge cost savings on manual storage, data
    retrieval time.
  • In-built workflow technique integrates the
vertical hierarchy of the organization for a
fast decision making process, which in turn saves
time and cost on wait, idle and breakdown.
  • Indirect cost saving of around US 200,000
    annually, which also means increased
    productivity.
  • Secured storage of all drawings in a server,
the vital base for any information for smooth
    running of the plant.
  • Intelligent retrieval of complete drawing
history at any time, enhances the decision making
    capability
  • Software driven Change management System,
reduces the manual errors in redrawing, improve
efficiency, reduce cost and streamline the annual
    maintenance mechanism.
  • Since project was outsourced to India, the
project development cost was 3-4 times less than
the cost would have incurred with US, European
    vendors.
  • The client has ultimately built a sustainable
competitive edge in the European power trade
    market with this value addition.

Why would you need this Solution ? Q.1 Do you
have 1000 multiples of Drawings in paper formats
? Q.2 Does your company spend office space and
storage racks for storing drawings ? Q.3 Do you
spend more than 10 minutes to trace specific data
from drawings ? Q.4 Do you see different version
of drawings for same category with your staff
? Q.5 Do you end up purchasing same spares
component already in the stock ? Q.6 Do you waste
time everyday more than 1 hour on plant
modification meetings ? Q.7 Do you see
unauthorized people carrying your drawings ? Q.8
Did you ever got shocked on loss of drawings, and
forced to redraw and waste time ? Q.9 Does your
drawings integrated with your EDP / MIS / ERP or
any other IT backbone ? Q.10 Do you have
controlled plant modification procedure ? Q.11 Do
you have a defined process for distributing
drawings with your staff, vendors ? Q.12 Do you
have different databases with mechanical /
electrical engineers and drawings ? Q.13 Does
your new recruited engineers struggle to
understand your drawing practice ? Q.14 Do you
feel the need to standardize your drawings and
documents ? Q.15 Do you understand the importance
of DATA ?

If your answer is, YES You are intelligent
and would like to focus your company with a long
term cost control objective and stay tuned to
technology and growth of the organization with
enhanced competitive edge. NO You are
