• First European, Willem Janszoon, sighted
  Australias Coast in 1606.
• Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman's, first journey to
  Australia in 1642.

18th Century

• Captain Cook lands in Botany Bay on the Eastern
  side of Australia in 1770 and claims it New South
  Wales.
• First settlement in 1788 Sydney was founded.

19th Century

• Mathew Flinders completes the first voyage around
  Australia in the 'Investigator in 1803.
• South African War 1899-1900 - forces offered by
  the individual colonies.

20th Century

• World War I - Anzac troops in Europe - including
  Gallipoli.
• World War II - Anzac troops in Greece, Crete, and
  North Africa (El Alamein) and the Pacific.
• The Japanese bomb Darwin in 1942.
• Two million new immigrants, the majority from
  continental Europe during 1948 - 1975

• Korean War 1950-1953
• Vietnam War 1964-1972 - Comonwealth troops in
  alliance with US forces.
• 1967 ASEAN was established
• Whitlam abolishes 'white Australia' policy in
  1974
• Australia celebrates its Bicentennial - 200 years
  since the first European settlement in 1988

• Australia hosts the Olympic Games in the year
  2000.
• Australia celebrates the Centenary of the
  Federation of Australia in 2001.
