5Publishing Industry Indicators?
- Chinas publishing industry has already reached
a considerable level which is equivalent to the
use of 4.86 million tons of paper. - But in terms of per capita possession of
publishing resources, there is a big gap between
China and developed countries. - Chinas per capita consumption of newsprint...
and other paper is 10.44kg(compared to) 146 kg
in the USA, 118 kg in Japan - China needs more radical upgrading and
improvementwith regard to concepts of
publishing and modes of profit making.
- (Wu Shulin, Vice Minister, General Administration
of Press and Publications of the Peoples
Republic of China, from Beijing International
Publishing Forum, Aug 2005)
6Global Growth in Published Output
- There are about 23,000 scholarly journals in the
world collectively publishing 1.4 million
articles/year. - The number of articles published and number of
journals have grown by 3 and 3.5/year
respectively. - The reason is the equally persistent growth in
researchers at 3 now standing at 5.5million

Conference, Trondheim, 2006)
