Title: Basic Geometry

1
Basic Geometry
  • A learning of basic geometrical properties and
identities as they apply to general mathematics
    and the real world

2
Objectives
  • Understand, describe, and apply the concepts of
    symmetry, similarity, and congruence.
  • Explore properties of geometric figures using
    coordinate representation
  • Use inductive and deductive reasoning to discover
    and verify properties of figures.
  • Classify figures in terms of congruence and
    similarity and apply these relationships

3
More Objectives
  • Investigate, explore, and describe the geometry
in nature and real-world applications using
    models, manipulatives, and appropriate technology
  • The students will learn to work in groups to
    solve mathematical problems

4
Concepts
  • Basic understanding of Area, perimeter, and
    angle formulae
  • Understanding, uses, and applications of the
    Cartesian Plane
  • Shape similarity and congruence definitions and
their application to squares, triangles, etc

5
Teaching Techniques
  • Use of Jigsaw II format for group learning inside
and outside of classroom (Robert Slavin)
  • After school study group for students
  • Lunch group for students who perform poorly
  • Conscious attempt to avoid gender biasing in
    classroom

6
Application
  • At beginning of class each day students will
    complete review worksheet
  • Homework each day is a worksheet centered on the
    lesson learned each day
  • During class students must use concepts learned
in class to complete problems on the chalk/white
    board (still in groups)

7
Activity
  • Students will complete a poster project
  • First students must use concepts learned in class
to solve real world geometrical problems
  • Students will create a poster showing the real
world problems they solved using concepts from
    class
  • Students will affix basic properties where
applicable in their real life solutions
  • Students will present their poster to the class

8
Evaluation
  • Students will be marked on their improvement from
the beginning homework sheets to the final sheets
  • Students will be graded on their poster projects
  • Use of geometrical identities
  • Computational accuracy
  • Applicability of concepts to real life situations
    chosen

9
Plan for One week course
10
Classroom Setup
  • Desk order and shape
  • Allocation of student seating
  • Basis in Jigsaw II
  • Relationship with first worksheet
  • Effort and evaluation
