Title: Using Location Changer in the IShare Environment

1
Using Location Changer in the I-Share
Environment
  • ICAT Forum, November 13, 2007
  • Casey Sutherland, CARLI Office

2
Installation Instructions
  • Detailed, step-by-step instructions for
installing the Location Changer program have been
added to the Installing and Configuring Gary
Strawns Software in I-Share Libraries document
    on the CARLI website
  • http//www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/se
    cure/execute/strawn/strawn_install.pdf
  • The program itself, as well as Mr. Strawns
documentation for it, is also available from the
    CARLI website
  • http//www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/se
    cure/execute.html

3
Installation Instructions (cont.)
  • As with other Strawn utilities, the PC must be
configured for ODBC to use Location Changer.
  • If you have successfully run Access reports
against your Voyager database on the PC, you
already have ODBC configured on that workstation.
  • If you have successfully run Catalogers Toolkit
    (CTKV), Correction Review, and/or Correction
Receiver on the PC, you already have ODBC
    configured on that workstation.
  • Details about the ODBC requirement are in the
    Installing document.

4
Installation Instructions (cont.)
  • If you have never installed any Strawn program in
your library, you must follow the installation
    instructions carefully!
  • It is do-able, it just takes a little while to
    get there!
  • If you arent familiar with the steps involved in
installing software on a PC, you may need to get
help from whoever does PC support at your
    institution.
  • The Installing document also includes required
configuration settings for using the Strawn
    programs in the I-Share environment.
  • There are also many optional configuration
settings at the discretion of the library/user.
  • The CARLI website also has links to Mr. Strawns
documentation that can be very useful for
    decisions on optional configuration settings.

5
Installation Instructions (cont.)
  • If you are installing Location Changer and you
already have Catalogers Toolkit (CTKV) and/or
Correction Receiver installed on the same PC, you
must re-install the current version(s) of CTKV
and/or Correction Receiver already on the
workstation when you install Location Changer.
  • These programs share DLL files, and if they are
out of synch between the different utilities, one
or more of the programs may become
    non-functional.
  • CARLI staff verify compatibility between the
different program versions before they are posted
    to the CARLI website.
  • If in doubt, re-install all three programs with
current versions from the CARLI website.
  • Re-installation/upgrading to a newer version is
much easier than the initial installation!

Using Location Changer in I-Share Libraries
(cont.)
  • The CARLI Office STRONGLY recommends the
    following
  • When using Big Batches, run a preview/test of
EACH job, and review the log file before
    proceeding with a production run.
  • Location Changer will sometimes make changes to
targeted or linked records, other than the
    specified changes in the job.
  • Usually, these will be the right thing to do, but
the only way to know for sure before the changes
are made is to review the log file for each
    preview/test run.
  • If the supplemental changes are not desirable,
you can remove the specific records from the
input file before performing a production run.
  • When using Big Batches, supply a file of record
IDs (via Access query results) instead of
allowing Location Changer to select the records
    to be changed.
  • Processing a file of record IDs is much faster
    than Location Changers select functionality.
  • In CARLI testing, Location Changers select
    functionality occasionally targeted records for
change that were not appropriate to the task at
    hand.

Getting Help with Location Changer
  • Contact the CARLI Office
  • support_at_carli.illinois.edu
  • Please send questions about Location Changer to
CARLI Support, rather than directly to Mr.
    Strawn.
  • We want Mr. Strawn to be able to spend his
valuable time developing his utilities, rather
than fielding questions about them that CARLI
staff may be able to answer.
  • If we cant answer your questions, we will
forward them to Mr. Strawn on your behalf.
  • Thank You!
