Encino, California - She loved playing baseball and football with
neighborhood boys. - At 10 her dream was to become a professional
football player but, her parents convinced her to
pursue tennis. - Sally pursued this area and became a ranked
player on the junior tennis circuit

- She earned two degrees one in English and
another in Science. - Ms. Ride then earned her masters in
astrophysics. - During graduate school Sally applied to an add
she saw in a newspaper to become a member of
NASA. - 1977 She joined NASA

Sally went through training that included
parachute jumping, water survival, gravity and
weightless environment, and radio
communication. 1983 Dr. Sally Ride became the
first American woman in space on the shuttle The
Challenger. 1984- Took her next flight for eight
days on the challenger 1986- The Challenger blew
up and Sally was part of the team to investigate
the disaster. 1987- Sally officially retired
from NASA.

- Sally is now a Physics professor at the
University of California. - She writes childrens books encouraging them to
reach for the stars. - Dr. Ride headed EarthKam an internet based NASA
project that allows middle school classes to
download photos of the earth from space. - Imaginary Lines an organization founded to
support all girls interested in science and
technology. - Inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame at
Kennedy Space Center on June 21, 2003 and has won
numerous awards.
