Properties of Alkali Metals
PHYSICAL

• Soft metals -
• can be cut with a knife
• Low densities
• Good conductors
• So reactive they cannot be displaced by other
  elements
• The alkali metals are silver colored except for
  cesium, which is pale gold

CHEMICAL

• React with water, oxygen, etc.
• Water soluble (present in sea water)
• Have one valence electron
• THERE ARE NO NATURAL OCCURANCES (only found as
  ions)

• Potassium chloride found in bananas used in
  fertilizers, photography, medicine
• Lithium used in medicine
• Rubidium space vehicles, engines
• Cesium photocells
• Francium not widely used
