Title: The ever changing designs and functions of fonts.
1The ever changing designs and functions of fonts.
- The design and manufacturing implications of
continually meeting the changing requirements of
drinks dispense equipment.
Jonathan Wildgoose Managing Director, Drinks
Dispense Group.
2Why DDG?
The Drinks Dispense Group were winners of The
Best Factory Award for Innovation in 2006. 50
of our sales were of new products, 40 of our
sales were of products under 3 years
old. Although we were a small company we were
innovating as quickly as world class global
corporations.
(DDG achieved 76 new product sales last month)
3The changing world of fonts
The Piccadilly T bar for J D Wetherspoon Designe
d by DDG for the Pub Retailer. Technically
assessed by Innserve. Condensation using glycol
cooling chosen by Retailer. Tap cooling to ensure
NO WASTAGE. 17 weeks from order to roll out.
4Vin Service
In addition to developing our own designs we also
brand products from Vin Service of Italy whom
we represent here in the UK.
5So what has changed?
- Pub groups have got focused.
- 2. National brewers driving brands.
- 3. Technology improvement.
- More competitive!
6Focused pub groups
Certain pub groups are trialling and specifying
drinks dispense kit from cellar to tap because
what they were offered FOC was not good
enough. The challenge for font manufacturers is
therefore extended
7- Design to enhance the pub brand and overall
- quality of the drinks not an individual
- beer or cider brand.
- 2. Designed to ensure fonts keep drink cool.
- 3. Designed to ensure minimum wastage.

11Driving brands
The national brewers have a focus on driving
brands This has led to the success of the Extra
colds. The fonts support this in a number of
ways They have a quality look. They promise
cold with the effect of condensation. They
deliver cold beer. The fonts are finished in
high quality chrome not cheap plastic .
12Temperature
2001. Kronenbourg 1664,France, ideal dispense
temp 7degC 2005/6. Extra colds, ideal dispense
temp 2degC ? What next? Canada Molson Sub Zero?
13Before-after
Previously major brands went through Design
agency Tender High tooling cost Long roll-out
time. Result Illuminated plastic
counter-mount. The first pint was
horrible and thrown away.
Today the font As above, but lower tooling cost
and roll-out time And higher quality metal font
delivering quality beer.
14Technology improvements
- We operate in a fast moving competitive market
- CAD design speed
- Rapid proto-types a few days, previously weeks
- Tooling high pressure die cast tooling took 16
to 24 weeks - Today 3 to 6 in China!!
- 4. Lighting Was festoons now ccfls or LEDs.

21Summary
It is a very competitive environment for all
parties. We have to provide higher specified and
better quality equipment at competitive cost in
short time frames. We have to understand
cooling, insulation, lighting, Electronics,
fluid dynamics, materials, processes, tooling,
finishing, plating, packaging, and assembly..
.and then get the Chinese to do it in 3
weeks!!
