Sustainability in Australian Universities
  • There has been significant growth in

  • 90 of Australian universities now have
environmental management plans but their scope
    varies
  • The ANU is a recognised leader in this area
  • Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability
(ACTS) is the umbrella body for sustainability
initiatives in Australia and New Zealand
  • Growing awareness among senior management and the
government sector about the importance of
    sustainability initiatives in higher education

4
Why is it important?
  • The higher ed sector produces about 1 of
    Australias Greenhouse emissions
  • The typical university uses between 500 million
and 1 billion litres of water per year
  • Universitys are significant producers of waste
    (gt 1000 tonnes per annum)
  • Many have large vehicle fleets, and are large
    trip generators
  • They have significant environmental risk issues
  • They are densely populated locations with high
environmental impacts close to that of a small
    city (e.g Cooma/Queanbeyan)

5
The ANUs Environmental Management System
