Bali Bombing

2
Bali Bombing
  • On October 12th, 2002, a tragic event occurred
  • The bombings were in a tourist district of Kuta
    on the island of Bali
  • 202 people were killed and another 240 people
    were injured
  • The Bali bombings were the deadliest act of
terrorism in the entire history of Indonesia

3
Why they bombed Bali
  • The reason behind the bombing was never
    completely figured out
  • Some think that the attack was revenge for
Australia helping East Timor gain freedom from
    Indonesia
  • Others think that it was from Australia joining
    the American invasion of Afghanistan
  • Many others believe that it was just a statement
by Muslims offended by the drinking and sexual
    promiscuity of Australians

4
Suspects
  • The suspects were the violent Islamist group
    Jemaah Islamiyah
  • Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, Imam Samudra, Mukhlas,
Idris, Ali Imron, Dr Azahari Husin, and Dulmatin
    are all the suspects
  • Three of these suspects were executed, one is
sentenced to life in prison, one was killed in a
raid of anti-terror policemen, and one has still
    not been arrested
  • The suspects that had punishment of execution of
the Bali bombing were executed in 2003
  • Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, named the "smiling bomber"
by the media for smiling during court
appearances, was the first of the Bali bomb
    suspects to go on trial.
  • Three suspects convicted had told the press and
the citizens of Indonesia, that they had not felt
any remorse killing their own people.
  • Idris and Ali Imron, were the only two to feel
bad and Idris said he asked god for forgiveness
after the bombing while Ali Imron said he felt
very sorry for the families of the victims

5
Effects on Indonesia
  • It had caused much confusion and horror on the
citizens of Indonesia and the survivors of the
    attack.
  • There have been a large number of bombings and
other violent incidents in Indonesia in recent
years, and it is possible that the Bali events
may be interconnected with these developments,
this causes distrust in many people

6
Resolved or ongoing?
  • There have been repeated attacks on nightspots
such as bars and massage parlors in Jakarta and
other cities by Islamic groups which see these
places as centers which must be eliminated. The
group with the heaviest reputation for these
    activities is the Islamic Defenders
  • The specific plotters have been arrested, except
for one who has continued to escape police, so it
is resolved but ongoing in the bigger picture

7
Victims and Heroes
  • There were many innocent victims of this horrible
    event
