History of Polystyrene

• Discovered by Eduard Simon in 1839
• Isolated it from a natural resin
• Hermann Staudinger
• Discovered Simons new molecule was a
  polymerization of styrene molecules that was a
  plastic polymer
• 1922 Staudinger published theories on polymers
• Said that natural rubbers were made of long
  repetitive chains of monomers
• 1953 won noble Peace Prize for his research
• 1930 BASF scientists developed a way to
  manufacture polystyrene
