US'
The US leads the world in terms of Internet
penetration, with 50.5 million households,
(48.7 of the US population), connected. In
Europe 6.4 million UK households (27 of the
population) are connected to the Internet. 7.1
million German households (20.7 of the
population) are online. 3 million French
households (12.1 of the population) access the
Net from home. American Internet users go online
on average 12 days in each month, while
Europeans connect less frequently an average of
9.9 days per net surfer in the UK, 9.9 in
Germany and 9.3 in France.

Worldwide internet economy booming
The worldwide Internet economy will soar past
the 1 trillion mark in 2001. By 2003, it will
be well on its way to a remarkable 3 trillion.
For every dollar of ecommerce revenue generated
in 1998, 93 cents were directly invested in the
Internet commerce infrastructure Corporations
will increase their investments significantly to
improve this ratio by 2003 Technology investments
accounted for 52 of worldwide Internet
spending. By 2003, technology investments' share
will have decreased to 39.

Smaller European enterprises ill-prepared for
e-business
A new report reveals that small and medium
enterprises, which constitute more than 9 in 10
European business customers, lack e-business
services and applications. 12 of such
enterprises polled in Europe have developed and
implemented an e-business strategy. 40 have no
e-business strategy at all. 2 do not have
Internet access. 15 are connected at less than
ISDN speed An increasing number of small and
medium enterprises are using speeds over
128kbps. They have started to employ
videoconferencing and voice/data integration

European B2C ecommerce market maturing
New research indicates the online retail market
in Western Europe will boom by over 400 percent
in the next two years, growing to EUR8 billion
this year, EUR14.7 billion next year and EUR64
billion by 2005. The number of Internet users in
Western Europe buying products and services over
the Internet will quadruple from 20 million this
year to 85 million in 2005
