2The Halo Model
This model provides a meeting ground between
theory and observation, a division between
cosmology and galaxy formation.
- Assumptions
- Galaxies reside in virialized dark matter halos.
- Halos are biased tracers of the underlying
density field. - Halo Occupation Distribution, P(NM) The
probability distribution function of the number
of galaxies in a halo of mass M. -
In the earlier work, using 2dF and DEEP2, we
found P(NM) does not evolve with redshift up to
z1, i.e. galaxies populate dark matter halos
the same way at z1 as at z0.

9Summary
- No-evolution hypothesis in HOD can not be ruled
out to the redshift z0.8 - ---- Galaxies populate similar dark matter
halos at z1 as at z0 - Halo Model N-body simulation provides a
practical way of building realistic mock
catalogs. - Having realistic mock catalogs is essential for
understanding the results of DEEP2.
10The Evolution of the HOD
( Do galaxies populate dark matter halos the same
way at z1 as at z0 ? )
- Null hypothesis The HOD does not evolve with
redshift. - Test using 2dF (LF ? (r) ) and DEEP2 ( ?(r) )
