Supernovae-A Whole Lot of Physics Going On
Abstract The supernova is a critical and
spectacular phase in the life of a star. During
the outburst itself, the heaviest of the chemical
elements are generated. The shock wave from the
ejected material both mixes the enriched stellar
material and initiates the compression of the
mixed material and interstellar medium for the
next generation of stars. During this
presentation, the buildup of nuclear species from
the simplest of the elements, hydrogen, during
the pre-supernova stages will be reviewed. Many
concepts of basic physics play a role from the
initial formation of the star through initiation
of the internal nuclear furnace through the red
giant phases and triggering of the supernova
explosion, and then to the reinitiation of the
cycle by the ejected material to trigger the next
generation of stars.
