This was a defensive site on the hill behind
where the church of St Marys is now found.
6Medieval Penwortham
Most cottages were found near to the castle as
these were still dangerous times. The castle and
the priory overlooked the river and the new
settlement of Middleforth nearby was starting to
develop.
7First Bridgeover the river
Penwortham Old bridge, 1755, near the Bridge Inn.
With the building of this bridge Penwortham
became an important route centre.
8Railway bridge over the river
Built in 1882, to carry the railway to Howick,
Longton and beyond.

10Ways of Crossing the River Ribble
A series of fords (shallow crossing places)
developed in order to cross the river before the
first bridges were built. At least 5 of these
are known about.
In 1838 the main west coast railways arrival saw
the building of the second bridge over the river.

13Preston Dock
When Preston Dock opened in 1890 it was the
largest in Europe. The Docks are built on the
old course of the river with a new channel for
the river having been dug.
