  • A. Democratic-
  • ensuring that all people have the same rights.
  • B. laissez faire-
  • to let alone, or not meddle with the economic
    affairs of government.

  • the power of the Supreme Court to declare laws
    unconstitutional.

2. How did Thomas Jefferson differ from other
presidents?
  • A. Personal style- Jefferson was more informal as
    a president
  • -He shook hands instead of bowing, wore plain
    clothing, rode his horse around the capital, and
    answered the door of the White House in his
    pajamas.

  • Chief Justice Marshall was faced with a problem

A. Identify William Marbury-
  • Adams appointed Marbury to the Supreme Court as
    his last act as president, but forgot to deliver
    the papers.
  • Jefferson ordered James Madison (Secretary of
    State) not to carry out the orders.
  • Marbury sued Madison.

B. Marbury v. Madison-
  • The most important Supreme Court decision ever
    decided.
  • -Marshall decided that the Supreme Court had not
    been given the power to decide the case. (not in
    the Constitution)
  • -to do so would be unconstitutional.
  • -He threw the case out (saying the Judiciary Act
    was unconstitutional), solving his problem.

C. Why is the power of Judicial Review so
important?
  • -It gave the Supreme Court the power to decide if
    laws were unconstitutional.
  • -Judicial Review is the most important power the
    Supreme Court has.

If men were angels, no government would be
necessary.
