Road Safety for children - Introduction
  • My name is Marsha Goren. I am an English
    teacher now for many years and have been
    educating children about Road Safety during my
    professional career. My workbook is now a part of
    the English curriculum in Israel and I decided to
    renew the project by creating an Internet web
    site in cooperation with Intel.
  • I teach in Petach Tikva, Israel in the
    central district of the state in an elementary
    school called Ein Ganim. I teach the 4th, 5th,
    and 6th grade regular and gifted classes.

How We Use Computers
  • Using the Internet for research purposes.
  • Children use the computer to express their ideas
    by Power Point Presentations.
  • Children use the computer to design graphics.
  • Children help me in creating my web sites. (I
    currently have three sites on the web including
    this one).
  • Children use computer technology such as forums,
    chats, e - mails and more.
  • Children use their creativity on the computer by
    expressing themselves and therefore improve oral
    and written skills.

  • Why are there so many accidents in Israel and
    what can we do to prevent them?
  • What can you do to prevent accidents?
  • How can children contribute to this important
    subject?
  • What can children do to help?

Targeted Objectives
  • The students will be able to use new vocabulary
    about road safety
  • Grammatical structures
  • Stories about road safety.
  • Be able to identify the dangers of not being
    careful on the roads.
  • Understand how they are responsible and how they
    can save their lives.

Seeing Reason - By Intel
  • The seeing reason mapping tool is a very
    effective way in teaching children about cause
    and effect. By using this tool, children improve
    their vocabulary, understanding of complex
    problems and learn to find the best and fastest
    way to sure results.
  • The children work in pairs or groups on a subject
    that the teacher presents. Then, they begin to
    think about the question that the teacher
    presented (In our case, What are the reasons for
    many road accidents in Israel and how can we
    prevent them)?

Seeing Reason - By Intel
  • After the research and discussion the children
    start working with the mapping tool.
  • The first thing they do is add the primary
    factors to the tool They write an explanation
    about each factor and then after adding all of
    the primary factors they begin the second stage.
    The second stage is to write the relation between
    one factor to another and to find as many
    relations possible.
  • After this process, they begin to observe their
    work. They see that they should change some of
    the factors according to the findings and by
    doing so, their work changes bringing new
    discussions, more problems and the need to find
    solutions.

Preventing Solutions In Class
  • After ending the mapping tool exercise, the
    children will have to present new ideas and the
    results in front of the class.
  • The presentation can be done in any creative way
    possible.
  • Finally, the children will make new questions for
    further research and continue the project.
