Title: Real Time Locating Systems RTLS

1
Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS)
  • Terms of Reference
  • by Marsha A. Harmon

2
ANSI ASC INCITS T20
  • Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS)
  • After 21 months of development has published an
    approved standard including
  • ANS INCITS 371.1 - 2.45 GHz Protocol Air
    Interface
  • ANS INCITS 371.2 - 433 MHz Protocol Air
    Interface
  • ANS INCITS 371.3 - Application Program Interface
  • Following INCITS 371 publication, decision made
to take the standard to international, choices
  • Fast track through JTC 1
  • NP/CD, plus new efforts in ISO TC 122/104 JWG
  • NP/CD, plus new efforts in JTC 1/SC 31 as a
separate technology gt gt gt SC 31/WG 5

3
RTLS Technology or Application of RFID?
  • ASC INCITS T20 strongly feels that RTLS is a
separate and distinct technology from that of
RFID in much the same way as wireless local area
networks are a separate and distinct technology
    from that of RFID.
  • All three services may share the same
electromagnetic space but they are uniquely
    separate technologies.
  • The SC 31 leadership and 122/104 JWG agree

4
TC 122/104 JWG Resolution
  • JWG and INCITS T20 believe that SC 31 is the best
place for this technology standard. JWG deals
    onlywith applications
  • Resolution 2 (JWG n03061 - Auckland 2003-03-25)
  • New Work Item for Real Time Locating Systems
  • ISO/TC 122/104 JWG recognizes the value of the
Real Time Locating Systems technology in
    potential applications of Automatic
Identification and Data Capture. The JWG looks
to ISO/IEC JTC 1/ SC 31 to provide technical
standards in support of applications in the
supply chain. We recommend that a proposed New
Work Item (NP) for RTLS, to be initiated by the
INCITS T20 committee, should be brought forward
    to SC 31.
  • UNANIMOUS

5
Fast Track
  • Document must go through without any changes.
INCITS attempted to convince T20 to move the
    document internationally through Fast Track
  • INCITS T20 believes that there are other
    technologies meeting different application needs
that would be excellent candidates for
    international standardization
  • While INCITS T20 has met monthly for nearly two
years to develop this American National Standard,
it encourages international review to create the
best set of RTLS standards possible
  • INCITS T20 feels the best way to encourage
international adoption of its work and the
incorporation of new technology is through an
NP/CD process, not a Fast Track process

6
Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS)
  • An ADC technology that provides both
    identification and location, generally through
    multi-lateration
  • Types
  • Sign Post/Localizers (Been Here)
  • Time of Flight Ranging Systems
  • Amplitude Triangulation
  • Differential Time of Arrival (DTOA)
  • Cellular Triangulation
  • Satellite Multi-lateration

7
Types of RTLS
  • Conceptually there are five types of RTLS
  • Locating an asset via satellite - requires
    line-of-sight - resolution to 10 meters
  • Locating an asset by virtue of the fact that the
asset has passed point A at a certain time and
    has not passed point B
  • Locating an asset by virtue of providing a homing
beacon whereby a person with a handheld can find
    an asset
  • Locating an asset in a controlled area, e.g.,
warehouse, campus, airport - area of interest is
instrumented - resolution to 3 meters
  • Locating an asset in a more confined area - area
of interest is instrumented - resolution to 10s
    of centimeters
