Home Rule the Easter Rising
  • Mr McDonald

2
What we will learn today
  • What Home rule was
  • Why it divided Ireland
  • What impact the First World War had
  • What the Easter Rising was
  • What the consequences were of the Rising

3
Keywords
  • Home Rule This meant Ireland was self governed.
This was not done since the Act of Union in 1800.
  • Sinn Fein Irish Republican movement wanting
Irish Independence from Britain not Home Rule.
  • Unionists They are people wanting the link with
Britain to remain no to Home Rule!

4
Home Rule
  • Home Rule had been talked about before.
  • In 1886 and 1893 the British Parliament had tried
to pass the Home Rule Bill but failed.
  • Too many British MPs did not trust Irish
    Nationalists.
  • Some British MPs helped create the Ulster
Unionists who opposed Home Rule why?

5
Many different reasons
  • Protestants in Ulster did not want to be the
minority Home Rule would mean that.
  • Many thought an Irish Home Rule might damage the
Empire others might want it too!
  • Home Rule might lead to a move for independence!

6
Home Rule 1912
  • In 1912 the Bill was tried for a third time and
    passed!
  • By 1914, the Irish would have their own
    Parliament.
  • But what happened in 1914?
  • Home Rule was suspended how might that make
    some Irish people feel?

7
Effects of Home Rule Rise in opposition! (on
both sides!)
  • Protestants
  • Feared theyd lose out in Home Rule.
  • Ulster Unionist Party created In 1880s to stop
    Home Rule.
  • Solemn Covenant was signed by 400,000 who
    promised to resist Home Rule.
  • Ulster Volunteers formed to fight Home Rule!
  • Catholics
  • Irish Nationalists promised Home Rule.
  • Feel betrayed by British.
  • Nationalist Party and some Fenians form Irish
    Volunteers
  • Like the Ulster Volunteers they get weapons ready
    for a fight!

Saved by the War?
  • Because of the outbreak of WW1, the crisis being
created was not stopped but delayed.
  • The UVF went to France as did many Catholics.
  • Some nationalists refused to fight on behalf of
    the British though.
  • Some saw an opportunity to take Ireland whilst
the British were fighting in France.

10
Notice the strong connection with the Orange
Order.
11
The Easter Rising of 1916
So why do it? Why fight when you are going to
loose?
  • Easter Monday 1916, 150 people took over the GPO
    in Dublin.
  • They declared the Irish Republic what is that?
  • Many of them were Fenians or members of the IRB
    (Irish Republican Brotherhood).
  • The fighting was viscous and it was quickly
    apparent the British would win.

Why Fight?
  • Considering they were fighting the British Army
they were bound to loose so why fight?
  • The answer lies in the getting the message across
to peoples hearts and minds sowing the seeds
    of a republican ideal.
  • Creating sympathy for the Irish Republican cause.
  • Remember many people were upset at the suspension
    of Home Rule!

18
Did it work?
  • The reaction by the British made sure it worked.
  • The British were seen as heavy handed and brutal.
  • They executed 15 of the ring leaders (one who was
    dying anyway!)

19
Hardening of Attitudes
  • Unionists
  • Saw Nationalists as traitors for their attempt to
gain independence whilst soldiers were dying in
    France.
  • Unionists are even more against Home Rule.
  • Nationalists
  • More people flocked to their cause because of the
tactics and justice of the British.
  • Rebels seen as Martyrs.
  • More Nationalists support Sinn Fein and not
    Nationalist Party why?

20
How do you think this might affect the elections
of 1918?
  • Is a protestant in Ulster going to vote for Home
    Rule?
  • What about an Irish Nationalist
  • What about someone who supports Sinn Fein?
  • Who do you think will be in the majority?
  • What might be the consequences?
